Term 2, Week 5, 2024

From the Principal

Tālofa lava, aiga o le Kolisi a Howick,

This year’s Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Samoan Language Week) embraces the theme of service: Tautua i le alofa, manuia le lumana’i - Serve in love for a blessed future. This theme highlights that the maintenance of gagana (language) is achieved through consistent tautua (service), particularly through the values of alofa (love), fa’aaloalo (respect), and vā fealoa’i (respectful relationships).

At Howick College, we celebrated this week with various student-led activities, including a siva (dance) and art workshop, student interviews, and a lunchtime cultural performance. On Thursday, Samoan students were encouraged to wear cultural dress in celebration of their heritage.

Samoan students wear cultural dress to school.

The Samoan flag flew proudly at Howick College this week.

Samoan is the second most spoken language in Auckland, which is regarded as the largest Polynesian city in the world. It is also the third most spoken language in New Zealand, following te reo Māori and English.

Language is the embodiment of culture, heritage, and the collective experiences of a community. For all cultures, language serves as a linguistic tapestry that weaves together the values, customs, and traditions passed down through generations. Being proud of one's language is synonymous with being proud of one's identity. By embracing the Samoan language, individuals can develop a greater understanding of their roots, fostering a sense of belonging and connectedness to their cultural heritage and identity.

Have a safe and relaxing long weekend.

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

Looking Back - 1995:
Opening of New Howick College Library

Dame Catherine Tizard chats with Principal Bill Dimery and Howick College students.

On Friday, March 3, 1995, then-Governor General Dame Catherine Tizard opened the new and expanded Howick College library and multimedia room. The $1.8 million building project, which also included 11 new classrooms, 2 science labs, and a language resource room, provided students with access to 'modern technology' for their research and learning. At that time, the internet itself was still a novelty, and Mr Dimery's 3rd Form Social Studies class utilised it to investigate whether another emerging technology, the DVD, would prove feasible.

Today's students, equipped with personal devices, ultra-fast broadband internet, wireless printing, the cloud, and the ability to locate resources globally via the online library catalogue, would hardly recognise the 1995 library, which was considered cutting edge at the time. This year, we look forward to reopening our library after the latest round of refurbishments.

Model United Nations Assembly 2024

MUNA Delgates from left: Akarsh Nair, Rama Balasmeh, Eva Malez Ocampos, Prajna Chaudhry (UN Youth Club leader), Yoshini Anantharangan, Harnain Dhaliwal (UNYouth Club leader)

Each year, the Rotary Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) offers teams of Year 12 and 13 students the chance to represent specific UN countries and engage in debates centered on global politics and social issues. These debates run from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon, with the goal of raising awareness about the UN and international affairs, enhancing public speaking and debating abilities, fostering informed discussions on global challenges, and nurturing friendships among students from various schools.

This year's event, held from May 24-26 at Rosmini College, saw students from 48 schools represent 104 UN countries. Delegates from Howick College - Akarsh Nair, Rama Balasmeh, Eva Malez Ocampos, Prajna Chaudhry, Yoshini Anantharangan, and Harnain Dhaliwal - represented Belarus and Colombia. They demonstrated exceptional statesmanship, diplomacy, and public speaking skills while addressing critical topics such as respecting the territorial sovereignty of all UN member states, promoting gender equality, tackling climate change disparities, and proposing the establishment of a commission to govern nations' conduct in space.

Tree Planting at Mangemangeroa Reserve

This week, members of our HC Envirogroup went to Mangemangeroa Reserve to learn about the history, ecology, and importance of conservation in Aotearoa. To help with the rehabilitation of the reserve, the Envirogroup set out to create ‘nests’, which are natural grow beds, alongside our friends from Somerville Intermediate School and science teacher Ms. Alison Price. These ‘nests’ will be planted with a variety of five plants per nest, such as harakeke and kahikatea. Establishing a wide diversity of plants will provide a robust foundation for future bush and wildlife to establish. We are now looking forward to going back on the 7th of June to begin planting native plants to aid in the rehabilitation!

Spanish Quiz Evening

From left: Mr Alvarez (TiC European languages), Jack Harrison, Ella Coleman, Javier Etchegaray and Kaide Toia.

Last week, a group of our senior Spanish language students participated in the Spanish Quiz evening held at Takapuna Grammar School. The quiz featured questions about culture, sport, food, music, art, and famous Spanish-speaking people. Students were tested on their knowledge of all things Spanish while also interacting with other Spanish learners from around Auckland and practicing their language skills. Congratulations to Ella Coleman, Jack Harrison, Kaide Toia, and Javier Etchegaray, who represented Howick College and achieved a commendable 7th place out of 20 teams.

Health Centre

Covid-19, Colds and Flu

Covid-19, colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses are common in schools during winter. Here are some simple tips to prevent the spread of illness:

  • Wash and dry hands regularly, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, and using the toilet
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, not your hand
  • Regularly clean high touch surfaces – door handles, taps, table tops, phones, computer keyboards, etc
  • Keep your child at home from school if they are too sick to learn and need time to rest and recover
  • Get a flu jab NOW - it’s FREE for people who are pregnant, over 65s, and people at higher risk of getting very sick. Check with your healthcare provider to see if you are eligible.

Howick College Library - Book of the Week

Clicks: How to be Your Best Self Online  by Natasha Devon

How to Be Your Best Self Online is the perfect guide for young people navigating the digital world. There are three billion people online. Each of those people has their own biases, agendas and issues. It's little wonder when young people step into the digital world and are bombarded with 'hot takes', calls to cancel 'problematic' individuals, trolls, fake news and celebrity sales pitches they're likely to find it overwhelming and confusing.

This book wants to change that. It will teach young people how to; See and evaluate all sides of an argument; Spot fake news; Explain their 'take' persuasively; Use the internet to campaign for a fairer world; Get the most out of their online role models; Show allyship to marginalised groups.

Natasha Devon is a writer, campaigner and broadcaster. She travels to schools and colleges throughout the UK and the world, delivering classes and conducting research with teenagers, teachers and parents on mental health, body image and social equality. Natasha spoke to a wide range of experts and organizations for this book including The Centre for Countering Digital Hate, Childnet, Glitch, Fullfact and Stop Funding Hate.

Y9 Black Football: Progress Makes Coach Proud

The team gets a few pointers from Coach Rob during their game against King's College.

Congratulations to our Y9 Black Football team on playing an exceptional game last Saturday, winning 2-1 against King's College. Special mention to player of the day Dylan Figgins, who contributed extremely well in midfield and defense. Now four games into the season (1 Knockout Cup win, 1 league win and 2 league losses), Coach Rob Hannaby is very pleased with how this "great group of boys" is coming together as a team. Rob, a dedicated coach and avid Stoke City fan, has coached many of the team members since they were 5 years old and is finding the step up to secondary school level very rewarding.

Huge thanks to Coach Rob and the team manager, wife Emma Hannaby, for generously providing their time and expertise to make these opportunities and experiences possible for our students.

Celebrating Golfing Success

Congratulations to Glenn Solomann (Y12), a dedicated golfer and Ingham House student, who has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and skill at the 2024 Tairawhiti Inter-Club Pennants Championship.

Glenn and his father Dave have been traveling to Gisborne most weekends since March, representing a small country golf club just outside of Gisborne. After receiving the “wooden spoon” last year, Dave and Glenn led the team up the ladder placing 5th out of 8 teams in the 2024 Championships. They have been working with their team mates along the way, providing coaching and mentoring during and around their weekend matches.

At the finals last weekend, Tairawhiti Golf awarded Glenn Player of the Tournament title. Glenn’s performance was outstanding, winning 6 out of 7 matches. His achievement is particularly impressive considering he is one of the youngest players in a senior men’s competition.

On Sunday, Glenn faced a challenging match and, despite the loss, exhibited remarkable resilience and maturity. His ability to view the experience as a learning opportunity rather than a defeat is a testament to his character and sportsmanship.

Well done, Glenn! We look forward to seeing your continued growth and achievements both on and off the golf course.

Blues Youth Leadership Programme

The Blues Youth Leadership Programme aims to "empower our rangatahi (young people) to make good choices for great lives." It focuses on young athletes identified by their schools as emerging leaders with great potential. The programme provides leadership coaching to "build confidence, self-awareness, and courage to reach their full unique potential." Students have the unique opportunity to learn from leaders within the Blues organisation, including players, staff, alumni, and external experts.

Howick College was delighted to be invited to send ten Year 12 students to participate in the programme. The group attended four workshops that covered various topics, including:

1. Leading self and the power of belonging
2. Great leadership and overcoming challenges
3. Career pathways, Leadership and well-being
4. Leading others, high-performing teams, and servant leadership

Our students were praised as "an exceptional and outstanding group" who conducted themselves well and made the most of this unique opportunity.
