Kia ora tatou,
This week, our combined Pacific Peoples’ group from Whangapāraoa and Orewa College are performing at Polyfest. We send them to Polyfest with love and support. Both colleges are incredibly proud of this group’s hard work in getting ready to perform at this amazing festival. We also send love and support to Whangapāraoa College’s kapa haka who will perform.
Last Thursday we had our Pacific Peoples’ Fono. It’s wonderful that there were opportunities for talking, sharing, singing and meeting new families. Thank you to those who were able to come. Events like this help strengthen community bonds.
Last Friday (March 15) marked the five year anniversary of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. We acknowledged this by watching and discussing a presentation made by our Senior Cultural and Community Leaders. A minute silence was also held school wide.
On Monday we welcomed students from our sister school in Japan, Seiko High School. Having international students here allows us to learn about different customs, traditions, and perspectives and fosters greater understanding and appreciation of diversity and the world around us.
I would encourage all parents and caregivers to continue having discussions around the no phones out at school policy that will be implemented at the start of term 2. The consequences of failing to do this sadly will be punitive e.g. confiscation, detentions, parent meetings. Ideally we want students to be able to self manage.
All the best to our athletes who are participating in the Volleyball Nationals and Special Olympics.
Ngā mihi
Anna Kenny Acting Principal

Year 7 Education Outside the ClassroomIn weeks six and seven, all our Year 7 classes took part in Education Outside The Classroom. Classes had a range of different challenges, all provided by qualified instructors or our experienced Year 7 teachers.
Locations ranged from in-school activities to Orewa Beach to Wenderholm Regional Park to Woodhill Forest. A huge thanks goes to the parents that helped with supervision over this week, especially those that helped with transport to Wenderholm.
We also acknowledge the support of whanau, providing ingredients or equipment for camp cooking. Without parent support, our EOTC programme simply couldn’t operate.
Students participated in activities such as a school art trail, taskmaster challenge, outdoor cooking, raft-building, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, and a high-ropes course. The program included links to physical skills, art, performing arts, health, social studies, Te Reo and Maoritanga, Manaakitanga, water safety, life skills, and getting to know our local environment.
The skills and experience that students gained will be built on during Education Outside The Classroom in Year 8, which includes Year 8 Camp.
Next term, we have been fortunate to have secured funding to subsidise each class for a day and a half cycle safety programme run in partnership with Harbour Sport and Auckland Transport. More information will follow early next term. |

Level 2 Biology - Rocky Shore | | On Monday 11 March, the Level 2 Biology students went to see the Rocky Shore at the northern end of Orewa Beach.
While we were there we looked at the zonation and the adaptations of the animals that lived there.
This allowed us to see examples of what we were studying in class and helped us to understand the different concepts further. |
|
We all enjoyed our time there and are grateful that our teachers gave us the opportunity to get first-hand experience. We also had the drone capturing footage and aerial photos of the Rocky Shore to help us get an overall idea of the zonation.
During the time we spent at the shore, we collected data that we will be able to use to complete our NCEA internal." Article by: Cori Haywood Year 12 |

Careers HubAs we head towards the holidays, some senior students are thinking ahead and have applied for the STAR courses that are available in the school holidays.
If students are interested in being a Café Attendant, Cooking, Hairdressing, Interior Design and others, they could get a taste for these areas, sometimes with credits. Students can access more information on our Careers google classroom.
Other opportunities we have coming up for senior students are the KATTI programme for Māori students, Women in Trades, and onsite, we have Health Industry personnel (Surgeon, Physio, Med Lab Scientist and more) coming in next week to speak with senior students about their professions and their journey. In April, we also have Queenstown Resort College visiting to speak about Business, Adventure Tourism and Hospitality.
Last week we partnered with Food Technology to enable students to find out more about a pathway into Le Cordon Bleu school, so it is a hive of activity within Careers.
For year 13 students who are interested in applying to medical school in Australia, UCAT is now open to book for the test. This is also where there are practice tests and further information.

House Event - Extreme TugWhile the sun is still out we plan to do all the significant summer events and EXTREME TUG is one of them. With the popularity of previous years and the hype still from house party, it's fast becoming a regular and favourite event in the house year.
This event runs over three lunchtimes. Each lunch has a different year group, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-13 & Staff. Each house will tug against all other houses, if you win the most pulls, you win the competition.
Each house loaded up ten strong determined players with a mix of boys and girls. On "go", students pulled, heaved and screamed encouragement to do the best they could to get the rope over the line.
Well done to all participants and special thanks to Miss Loader the event coordinator for Extreme Tug. The winners from the week are:
