To our esteemed audience, gathered from far and wide, we celebrate as we gather here for the common purpose.  Welcome to Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori language week).  The words to support this special occasion, take it (Māori language) to the world, take it to the sky, take it to all the people, not allowing it to fade away.

A special welcome to Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.  This week is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate and promote the richness of the Māori language and culture within our school community.  At Orewa College we are encouraging everyone to get involved this week by engaging with Māori language and cultural activities, helping to ensure that our traditions and language continue to thrive.

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge our Year 7 and Year 8 students who participated in the AIMS tournaments in Tauranga last week.  It was inspiring to witness their positive contributions and dedication to their respective sports.  We saw some incredible successes, and it’s a testament to the hard work and commitment of our students and their coaches.  Well done to all involved.

This week is a significant one for our senior students as they undertake their Grading Exams. These exams are an important step in their preparation for NCEA.  I wish all our students the very best of luck.  However, as we know, success comes not just from luck but from hard work, dedication, and thorough preparation.  Let’s support our students as they give their best effort during this crucial time.

Lastly, I want to extend my appreciation and gratitude to our community for your patience and support over the past few weeks as we navigated some challenges with securing relief teachers. Fortunately, we did not have to resort to rostering home students last week, thanks to the efforts of our dedicated staff.  However, as a result we highlighted through the media some of the challenges schools across New Zealand face in engaging quality relief teachers.  In response, the Ministry of Education and the Teaching Council are taking steps to address this issue both in the short and long term.  These actions are part of a broader effort to attract more people to the teaching profession and to address the immediate and long-term needs of our education sector. We hope these provisions will be a positive step forward in supporting our teachers and ensuring the best outcomes for our rangatahi.

Nō reirā, ngā mihi nui ki a koutou mō tō tautoko mō i ō tātou kura,
Thank you once again for your continued support for our school,

Nāku noa, nā,

Duke of Ed Hillary Gold Award

On Saturday 14  September, former student  Lizzie Tickner received her Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Gold Award at a ceremony at St Andrews College in Christchurch.

Lizzie is doing a Bachelor of Social and Environmental Sustainability Degree at Canterbury University.

During the ceremony she said, "completing the Gold Award opened my world to experiences and beautiful places that I would have never known existed.  I made great friendships along the way which will last a lifetime.

I would encourage anyone who is provided with this opportunity to snatch it up and take these moments to live."

SCHOGM 2024

The Student Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (SCHOGM) is an annual two-day flagship event. Where students from different parts of New Zealand come together in the Parliament Building, Wellington, representing a Commonwealth country.  This year, Hannah Babiera and Reya Rawat proudly represented Orewa College, serving as Commonwealth delegates for Mauritius together with teacher Ms Reihana as their chaperone.

In these two days, we engaged in heated debates and thoughtful discussions to form resolutions on the issues of plastic in the Pacific, climate change, governance, and international developments with all the other delegates.  This experience highlighted the significant role the Commonwealth plays, and the complexities involved in reaching agreements, as each resolution must be accepted by all member nations with respect to the values and interests as a country.

The event also welcomed an array of distinguished speakers, including Royal Commonwealth Society board members, Ms Jan Henderson - the New Zealand diplomat who has held roles as High Commissioner to Barbados and India, as well as Ambassador to Turkey and several other nations, Ms Nancy Liu - the National Party MP, Juliana Lafaialili - the Samoan Deputy High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms Iona Thomas - the British High Commissioner, and Lieutenant Colonel Martin Dransfield from the New Zealand Defence Force.

We had the privilege of talking with these remarkable leaders, which was a truly inspiring and motivating experience that we will never forget.

We were also able to sit in the debating chambers in the House of Representatives on the last day of the event during Question time and listen to the tribute speeches about the passing of the Kiingitanga, followed by the singing of a closing waiata.

Representing the school at this event was an honour and we hope the future participants will cherish and make the most of this remarkable opportunity, just as we did.
