Term 1, Week 8, 2024

From the Principal

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

As we approach the Easter season, it is important to recognise its significance beyond the traditional festivities of the Easter bunny and chocolate eggs (although I do confess that I am looking forward to some Whittaker's "Dark Block"). For Christians, Easter holds profound meaning as a time to commemorate the greatest sacrifice ever made: Christ taking on our sins and bearing the cross in our place. This act epitomises servant leadership, exemplifying the principle of putting others before oneself, to make our community, country and world a better place.

At Howick College, we value leadership among our staff and students, particularly encouraging our students to take on leadership roles. We offer excellent leadership programs, including those for our senior student leaders. From Year 9 through to our senior staff leaders, we adhere to the servant leadership model, emphasising that leadership is about serving the needs of others.

Within our college community, I frequently observe acts of servant leadership that place people and purpose at the forefront of decision-making. Our leaders demonstrate care and attentiveness, genuinely valuing others' perspectives and acknowledging individuals for who they are, not just their accomplishments. They willingly devote their time and forego personal gain to foster the success of others, embodying the essence of selflessness and trust.

Mahatma Gandhi succinctly captured this ethos when he said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." This sentiment resonates deeply with our philosophy of leadership at Howick College.

This week, I'm proud to highlight two outstanding young leaders who embody this spirit of service: our Head Students, Kalos Robinson-Frani and Sophie White. In the article below, I have invited them to share with you some of the initiatives they and their team of leaders have been involved with.

Have a safe and relaxing Easter break,

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

From Our Head Students

Head Students - Sophie White and Kalos Robinson-Frani

As we near the end of Term 1, having completed nearly a quarter of the academic year, we are thrilled with how 2024 has gone so far. We have accomplished a lot and have even more exciting things in store. This term got off to a great start as our Year 9 students rocked Top Town and had a fantastic day. This was followed by Athletics Day a couple of weeks later, where the entire school showcased top-tier commitment with house dress-up, mascot races, and Minerva house coming out on top.

Participation has been actively encouraged by our leadership team, resulting in the highest number of council sign-ups the college has ever witnessed. We are so proud of all those getting involved with our kura and school community, and we will continue to encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunities on offer.

We firmly believe there is something for everyone here at Howick College, with many major events planned for the year. The leadership team is currently in planning mode for our Mid-Winter Christmas Festival and our Spring Carnival - highlight events on our school calendar - while our lovely House Leaders have begun organising the top musicians in each House to compete at The Battle of the Bands. This is our biggest student-led event of the year and will be held at the end of Term 3.

Our Howick College Instagram page, @howickcollegeleaders, managed by the Head Students, provides updates on upcoming events and vital school information. It is important that our students stay up-to-date and keep in touch with these school-wide events as we want everyone to get the most out of their college years.

We are immensely proud of the proactive approach many of you have taken, involving yourselves in our kura and wider community this year. We look forward to seeing all of our students grow as they put their hand up to try more new things.

Celebrating French Language Week

The Language Department is thrilled to extend a heartfelt merci beaucoup to the Howick College community for their incredible support during French Language Week. It was truly magnifique to hear French greetings echoing through our école corridors from both staff and students alike. We are delighted to report that a vast number of students engaged in the various Francophonie-themed activities on offer, including the pétanque competition, French cinema (Ratatouille) and a French food stall complete with délicieuses crêpes. The enthusiasm and participation made the week a resounding success!

Keep an eye out for more language and cultural festivities on the horizon, as there will be more opportunities to celebrate our diverse linguistic heritage at Howick College together. Once again, merci beaucoup to all.

They are offering students a half-day tour of their Maintenance Base at Auckland Airport to help promote a pathway for passionate, hands-on students who are interested in aviation.

This tour will help students to understand the day-in-the-life of an aircraft maintenance apprentice and the career pathway and working environments they can look forward to! They are looking for students who have a keen interest in practical work, engines, and aviation as these individuals are likely to flourish in the industry.

Cricket 1st XI Defeat Mt Roskill Grammar

1st Cricket Boys Shine at Summer Tournament.

Our 1st XI Boys Cricket team played their second match of the Summer Tournament Week and another league match against Mt Roskill Grammar School last Thursday. Batting first, our boys got off to a solid start but then lost quick wickets before a 50+ run partnership between Saket Kapania (25) and Jack Read (57 - his first half-century for the 1st XI) helped the side to 166.

They then delivered a bowling and fielding display that would be hard to beat on any day or by any team in the competition, bowling Mt Roskill out for 22 off 22 overs! All four bowlers used contributed to the big win with Trent McVeigh taking 2-7 off 6 overs, James Dennis 3-4 off 6 overs, Sam Read 2-5 off 5 overs, and Billy White 3-6 off 5 overs. The bowlers were backed up in the field by some impressive catching from Callum Edwards as wicketkeeper and Sam Read at first slip. The final margin of victory was 144 runs to Howick!

Unfortunately, the boys' final match of the summer season against Lynfield College  was called off due to Saturday's inclement weather.

A big thank you to Don McVeigh for managing the team and for all the work he does behind the scenes. We would also like to thanks and acknowledge all the parents, caregivers, and whānau for their support.

Bacot Baseballer Bags Trophy

Congratulations to Yr 11 baseball player Nikau Waru (Bacot House) and his team the Howick Pakuranga Hawks, on winning the U16 Auckland Club Championship earlier this month.

The Hawks' impressive season record, with just one loss, speaks volumes about their commitment to their sport. Their dominating performances in the semi finals against West City (21-7) and finals against Central City (12-1) demonstrate their skill and determination.

Nikau proved a key contributor both on the mound and at the plate. In the semis, he pitched 3 innings without allowing a single hit or run, and in the final, he contributed 2 hits, 1 run, and 2 runs batted in (RBIs). A true asset to the team's success!
