Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,
I continue to be encouraged and proud of the incredible support our students show for each other every day. This past week, I've witnessed amazing peer support for various sports teams across different codes. Our students' passion and pride as supporters have truly uplifted their peers involved in these sports. Equally heartening is the personal support they provide to friends and classmates during challenging times - it fills me with immense pride.
This week, we also celebrated our International Food Festival, where students had the opportunity to sample cuisine from 20 different countries. Exploring these diverse culinary delights opens doors to inquiry questions about ingredients, preparation methods, and cultural significance. Food serves as a means to understanding different cultures - their lifestyles, traditions, and values. Our International students thoroughly enjoyed sharing their culture. Looking ahead, the coming week and early next term present more opportunities for our students to support each other in sports and cultural activities. Notably, in the arts, we have two senior productions, "Medea", from Y12 Drama and "The Trial" from Y13 Drama. These plays will run as a double bill on the 3rd and 4th of July. We are also looking forward to our school musical production, "Blood Brothers," playing from July 30th the 3rd of August (please see details for all below).
These events provide fantastic opportunities for our community to rally behind our talented students and our college.

LOOKING BACK
2000 & 2002 Geography Students Top NZ BursaryFrom left: William Lee, Victoria Mollard and Mrs Wright. In the early 2000s, Howick College geography students William Lee (2000) and Victoria Mollard (2002) achieved top marks in New Zealand bursary geography, scoring 97 and 96 percent respectively. They were each presented their awards and a $5000 scholarship at the top scholar ceremonies held at Government House in Wellington. William's other subjects - calculus (90%), statistics (93%), chemistry (94%), and physics (91%) - contributed to his total bursary score of 465 (the national highest being 476).
William credited his geography teacher, Mrs Janice Wright, for his high mark. Reflecting on his success, he told the Eastern Courier newspaper, "I thought geography would be the hardest subject to get a high mark in, but with her help, I got high marks in this subject as well."
Mrs Wright, who was Head of Social Studies at the time, was renowned for her dedication and innovative teaching methods. She created high-quality resources and used her exceptional knowledge and communication skills to engage her students fully. Mrs Wright believed that Howick College's commitment to field trips enhanced students' understanding by providing hands-on learning experiences.
After 35 years of devoted service, Mrs Wright retired in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiring generations of students with her passion for teaching.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL One School, One Community, Many CulturesLast Friday, Howick College was united in a journey of discovery and cultural appreciation as almost 200 students came together to run 26 food stalls, featuring mouthwatering cuisine from a multitude of countries. From the savory flavors of Italy to the spicy delights of Mexico, and the exotic tastes of Vietnam to the comforting dishes of South Africa, there was something to tempt every palate.
A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us for this flavorful and lively event. Your support not only celebrated our rich cultural diversity through food, music, and dress but also strengthened our community bonds in a joyous afternoon of cultural unity. Special mention to all those who worked so hard behind the scenes including Mrs Sundrum and the Community Council, our theatre technicians and event support crew.
All proceeds will go to our six House charities: SPCA, Mental Health Foundation, Blind Low Vision, Westpac Helicopter Rescue, Ronald McDonald House, and the Child Cancer Foundation.
Thank you once again to all the students, staff and wider community for making the International Food Festival 2024 a resounding success. We look forward to more celebrations of culture and community in the future!
PAIHERE CELEBRATES MATARIKIMānawanui a Matariki, te tau hou Māori - Celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year Matariki is a time for communities to come together, honour the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. This week, our Paihere tutor group celebrated Matariki with members of the Howick College staff. Sharing kai, an integral part of Matariki, included a traditional hāngī feast that was greatly enjoyed by all. Reciting their pepeha highlighted the blending of cultures at Howick College, embracing a strong Māori influence.
We hope our community takes the opportunity at this special time to remember those who have passed, celebrate their blessings, and prepare for the year ahead.
DRAMA STUDENTS OFF TO DUNEDINAria Takle-Lee and Finn Sullivan | | Congratulations to Aria Takle-Lee and Finn Sullivan, who have been selected as 2 of 47 students from around New Zealand to attend the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand's (SGCNZ) National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP). This prestigious programme, which will be held in Dunedin next term, is a week-long intensive course focusing on various aspects of Shakespeare's works, guided by leading directors. The pair impressed judges with their performances in a 15-minute production of 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' at the recent SGCNZ Sheila Winn National Shakespeare Festival, which contributed to their selection. |
Participants in the NSSP will also have the opportunity to be considered for the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company 2024, which includes the chance to perform at the iconic Globe Theatre in London. Should they be successful, they will join past Howick College Drama students, Lily Moore (2021) and Bianca Day (2022), in "treading the boards" at the Globe.
This achievement is not only a testament to Aria and Finn's hard work and dedication, but also to the high calibre of our Howick College Drama Department.
We wish them both the best in their Shakespearean journey!
TREES FOR SURVIVALTop: Brian Lee, Saket Kapania, Jiyun Kim, Mackayla Harrison, Muhammad Khurram, Ashle Nicholls, Laura Lee, Mr Henty, Sithmini Pathirana Nanayakkarage and host, Nicky Auld A select group of students recently visited the Auld Family farm in Brookby to help convert former pasture land into riparian planting. Since September 2023, Howick College has been nurturing flax and cabbage trees from seedlings in our school's shade houses. These dedicated students finally had the opportunity to plant them out. The field was "delightfully" boggy, and our planting next to the stream will help prevent erosion and protect the Papakura stream watershed.

SISTERS UNITED PROGRAMMESisters United leaders from left: Maria Maivalenisau, Sierra Lau'ese, Joy Fiu and Maia Kingi The Crown Yourself programme is well underway with our wonderful Year 12 leaders. They are up to the fifth workshop this week, out of a total of ten workshops.
Earlier in the year, five exceptional students had the opportunity to attend a Leadership Camp: Maria Maivalenisau, Sierra Lau'ese, Joy Fiu, Maia Kingi, and Charli Taituha. The students had a fabulous time at this inspiring camp, and they are now enjoying teaching what they learned to the junior students.
The workshops they have organised so far include "I Am Me," "Body Confidence and Positivity" (explored through dance and movement), "Spoken Word," "Social Media" (responsible use and digital well-being), and "Art" – exploring culture, family, things that make us happy, interests, hobbies, and images that bring peace.
CHINESE CULTURAL STUDIESThis term, our Year 9 and 10 Chinese classes have been immersing themselves in various aspects of Chinese culture, including taiji, a holistic practice that encompasses health, well-being, and self-defense; calligraphy, which includes the four elements or "treasures" of the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone; and dumpling making, covering the evolution of dumplings, their cultural importance, and the various types.
Ms Shen, with the help of Mr Mann, has been instrumental in guiding our junior learners through these enriching experiences, to foster a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture among her students.
EASTERN SCHOOLS CAREERS EXPOOn Wednesday last week, our Careers Department accompanied 160 Year 12 students to the Eastern Schools Careers Expo hosted at the Howick Leisure Centre. This event offered our students valuable insights into a wide range of careers, including vocational pathways, universities, the world of work, the Defence Force, and apprenticeships. Our exhibitors provided informative and relevant information to assist students in making decisions about their future and understanding the entry requirements for specific career fields. Many thanks to our Careers team for their dedication and hard work in organising this enriching experience for our students.

It's a no-balls-barred battle to become Japan's next top striker.
Are you the world's top egoist? After a disastrous defeat at the 2018 World Cup, Japan's team struggles to regroup. But what's missing? An absolute ace striker. The Football Union is hell-bent on creating a striker who hungers for goals and thirsts for victory, so Blue Lock -- a rigorous training ground for 300 of Japan's best and brightest youth players -- is created. To survive this battle royale, the last striker standing will have to out-muscle and out-ego everyone who stands in his way!

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT - HOMESTAYS NEEDEDDo you have room in your family for an international student? Hosting can be a very rewarding experience for both the student and the host family. Hosting an international student is an excellent way for families to learn about different cultures, share our unique "Kiwi" culture and build relationships with families in countries around the world.
With more international students wanting to come to New Zealand and study at Howick College, we are currently looking for warm welcoming families or couples interested in becoming hosts.
• Homestay families need to speak English (some Mandarin speaking families also required) • Applicants must be prepared to undergo police vetting • Students must be able to access Howick College easily (within school zone is preferred) • Fortnightly payments of $680 per student.
If this could be you, please contact our Homestay Coordinator - [email protected] SPORTS NEWSWaka Triumps Over CastlePictured from left with the ball - Locklyn Goldsmith and Hendrix Tusa (Photo credit - Amber Te Whaiti Y11) Congratulations to our 1st XV boys on their win last weekend against formidable rivals and 1B table leaders, Macleans College. Our boys withstood early pressure with strong defensive line speed, and their ability to generate forward momentum, control collisions, and provide stability at set-piece kept Macleans off the scoreboard as Howick claimed a 13-0 victory.
Special mention to the lone try-scorer, Year 11 winger Ethan Monk, who made a dazzling try from halfway, and to Sam Owen, who delivered on all three penalty goals.
But with no time to rest on their laurels, they are now focusing on preparing for their game against Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate this Saturday, June 29, at East Tamaki Rugby Club (NOT Sir Edmund Hillary as advertised earlier). Kick-off is at 12:00 pm.
This is a pivotal game in the competition, and the boys would love to have your support. So, break out the RED, and we'll see you there!
Big Weekend for Senior Underwater HockeyCongratulations to our Senior Open Underwater Hockey team who gave an impressive performance at the regional competition in Mt Maunganui last weekend. The team fought hard to take 2nd place in a nailbiting 2-1 finish against Glendowie College, bringing home the Silver medal. They have now qualified for the national competition, where they will join our junior team. Special mention to Rhyan Galloway who was named MVP.
Our Senior Girls also showed incredible determination, finishing strong with a win that saw them take 7th place overall. The team is predominantly made up of last year's juniors and, although they will not go through to nationals this year, it was an invaluable experience that they will build on for the future. Special mention to Chenuthi Galgamuwa, who was named MVP.
We are extremely proud of both teams who showed great sportsmanship and development. A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches, managers and parents who helped to make it a fantastic weekend. Special thanks to TiC, Mrs Tanya Parsons for all her help and support.
Brazilian Supporters The Loudest Ever!Left: Year 9 Black with their very vocal Brazilian fans. The team may have lost 4-0 to Auckland Grammar, but spirits remained high and the smiles were bright. A big shoutout to our fabulous Brazilian students who came down to support the team last Saturday. The girls cheered enthusiastically for all our players but especially for their fellow international student, Guilherme, who enjoyed being part of the team.
Thanks to everyone for the incredible support!
1st XV Girls Defeat Auckland Girls' GrammarHowick College played top-of-the-table Auckland Girls' Grammar on Monday, in what proved to be a great test for the team. Auckland Girls' are currently leading the table and were last year's finalists along with MAGS. Auckland Girls dominated the first 10 minutes, but Howick scored several long-range tries and led 17-0 at halftime. In the second half, Howick added 17 more points, winning the game 34-0.
Standout players included Marica Tukana, Levonah Motuliki, Keana Farani, and MVP Jaedah Hansen, who scored 2 tries and set up another.
Next week we play Southern Cross at 4 pm on July 1st. On July 3rd, we look forward to hosting the Canadian Taber Rugby Club, with kickoff time to be confirmed. Our own Liv Munro (Y11) will referee.
Nathan Cox to Referee at Kanga CupAbove: With the Alexandria Wendy MacLennan Memorial Cup. Below: In action as a referee | | Congratulations to Nathan Cox (Y12) who has been selected as one of two Auckland-based referees to represent Northern Region Football at the Kanga Cup in Canberra. The Kanga Cup is one of the biggest tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere, where he will referee Grades U18 and below from across the Pacific.
Nathan began his refereeing journey in 2021 by officiating his sister's team, and his passion for the game has only grown. In April 2022, he completed his Community Refereeing Course, and by February 2023, he earned his New Zealand Football Level 1 Referee Licence which allowed him to referee youth games in Auckland. In August 2023, after holding his Level 1 licence for six months and officiating at least 10 games, he earned his Level 2 Refereeing Licence, qualifying him to referee Premier Women's grades and below.
Last year, Nathan was awarded the Alexandria Wendy MacLennan Memorial Cup for the Most Promising New Referee by Northern Region Football. He has enjoyed many experiences, from being an Assistant Referee in Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup games to refereeing the American Samoa vs Auckland United match.
Nathan aspires to become a FIFA referee for international games and hopefully one day referee at a World Cup. Refereeing has opened many doors that he wouldn’t have had as a player, and he is excited about the future.
