Onehunga High School News

Tēnā koutou, ki te whānau o Onehunga High School

As the year comes to a close, I had the opportunity this week to present to staff the progress we’ve made against our annual plan. It was an occasion to reflect on the many goals we have accomplished together, demonstrating the collective effort of our school community. A standout achievement has been the continued improvement in NCEA results. This reflects not only the hard work of our students but also the targeted support and encouragement provided by our dedicated staff, who work hard to ensure each learner has the opportunity to succeed.

Our progress this year has been shaped by the collective commitment and care of our teachers, support staff, board, and whānau. Your ongoing efforts create an environment where students can thrive academically and personally. Thank you for the expertise, energy, and thoughtfulness you bring to your work and support each day. You have played an integral role in the successes we celebrate this year, and your contributions make a real difference in the lives of our students.

This week, we celebrated the achievements of our junior students at their prizegiving. It was a wonderful occasion to recognise their hard work, commitment, and growth across academic and extracurricular pursuits. Congratulations to all award recipients, and thank you to our whānau for joining us to celebrate these successes.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the selection of our prefect team for 2025. These students have displayed leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to our WAKA values, and I have no doubt they will represent Onehunga High School with pride and purpose. As we head into the summer break, I wish all our students, staff, and families a relaxing and joyful holiday. Thank you for your part in making this year a success at Onehunga High School.

Sports News

Junior Sports Day
Our Year 9 & 10 cohorts were provided an opportunity to get out and be active in the final days of the 2024 school year. The weather was great for some activities outside as the class groups rotated through four sports to play across their timetable.
- Volleyball
- Football
- Longball
- Touch

While the weather was hot, the students took the chance to be outside and express themselves on the grass.

College Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year

OHS had its first representation in a number of years as Lisa Hellyer was a finalist for the Distance Running category in the 2024 YSPOTY Awards. The ceremony was held at Eden Park on Thursday 28th November. It was a strong field in the category, and while Lisa did not take the top award she was recognised for her 2024 season. Please see the OHS news article for the full story.

2024 Head Prefects closing remarks

Magdalene Ieremia-Apelu, Head Prefect, 2024
2024 has been an exciting  rollercoaster of emotions. These years at Onehunga High School have shaped me into the person I am today, giving me confidence, resilience, and unforgettable memories. Though this chapter is ending, the values, friendships, and lessons I’ve gained here will carry me forward. I leave with immense hope and confidence in the incredible future that awaits all of us. "Life is a collection of moments, some good, some bad, but all unforgettable." I encourage you all to take every chance you have to make memories.

Thank you Onehunga High School for allowing me to serve as your Head Girl for 2024. I am truly grateful. Thank you, Fa'afetai Lava. O la outou pule lea.

I'd like to leave this message here for our future leaders ;
Lead with kindness, listen with empathy, and never underestimate the power of a small act of courage. Embrace every opportunity, learn from each experience, and always lift others up along the way. The future is yours to create—make it unforgettable.

Cameron Ross, Head Prefect, 2024
As the year draws to a close, I am feeling privileged more than ever at being a Head Prefect for 2024. Onehunga High School has given me five wonderful years, and although filled with lots of challenges, I wouldn’t change any of it.

To be able to lead the school and cohort as Head Prefect is an honour beyond what I could imagine. I am thankful for the staff of the school for making it what it is. Every staff member who is or has been a part of the school during my and my cohort’s time at school has, I’m sure even if just in a small way, influenced our journey. I am grateful for the cohort who I have spent my years with. They are a very unique bunch and have always kept school life fun and interesting. To them, thanks for the ride.

In that cohort, is the wonderful Prefect Team of 2024. A huge thanks to them for helping to organise events and make our school life run smoothly. Events like Pink Shirt day, Cultural week, Talentquest, fundraisers, and a school study space were all led and organised by prefects. School events like 3-way conversations and Open Days, wouldn’t have been able to run without the prefects. I’m sure the whole school is grateful for the work the prefects have done this year.

My deepest thanks go to the Board of Trustees, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our school moving forward and implement positive change in our school and community. It has been a privilege to work with you all as the student representative.

This year has been full of so many highlights for me. Being a Head Prefect, being the board student representative, co-leading the Academic Council, Captaining the senior Theatresports team, which took part in many matches and came third in the Area’s festival final, playing as part of Aria’s circus and playing in Rockquest and at school events, attending Model United Nations for a second year, along with many others and balancing that with a strong academic pursuit. This year has been an absolute blast, and I am very grateful for it. But it must come to an end, and I have to leave it behind. But I know they are very strong future leaders in the school, so I am looking forward to seeing how they grow, and how our school grows and develops. But for now, this is goodbye.

From Careers

This year, our students have embraced the many Careers opportunities available to them at OHS. Over 350 students participated in personalised careers counselling, while many seniors attended weekly Careers Insights seminars. Others explored career options through workshops, workplace visits, trips to universities and polytechnics, internships, and meetings with employers and tertiary providers. These hands-on experiences support our students to make well-informed decisions about their future pathways. Mrs. Shaw, our Careers Advisor, will be available over the summer break to assist students with their plans for 2025 and to discuss tertiary study options once results are released in January. Students and whānau are encouraged to reach out via email on [email protected]

In early 2025, we’re excited to launch a new OHS Careers website and this will provide a wealth of career information, news, events, and guidance – all on the one platform.
The Careers team would like to extend our very best wishes to all our school leavers - it  has been an absolute pleasure to work with you throughout the year.
