Term 4, Week 7, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

When I attended school many years ago, there was only one type of intelligence ever mentioned, and that was tested at the end of each year in a three-hour exam. Since then, we have learned about emotional intelligence, experiential intelligence, and now find ourselves needing to understand and integrate artificial intelligence into our formula for success. Our staff are being guided by our own team of enthusiasts, assisted by some outside experts, as we learn more about AI and what it means so that we can better prepare our students for life and work post-school.

We have started off by keeping it simple, learning about AI as a technology that aids us in achieving goals and enhancing teamwork. We have used simple, relatable first examples such as voice assistants or personalised recommendations on platforms such as TikTok or YouTube.

By connecting AI to our everyday experiences, it becomes more relatable. For example, helping doctors diagnose an illness or providing personalised product suggestions in online shopping. By familiarising ourselves with platforms like ChatGPT, our staff have engaged in hands-on activities that have inspired questions about how things work or novel solutions to current challenges. This creates an environment where they are inspired to explore the potential of AI for generating fresh ideas and solutions.

Importantly, discussions have started on the ethical considerations and implications of AI on individual, school, and societal levels. As Soren Kaplan says in "Help Your Team Tap into the Power of Artificial Intelligence" in Ins. Australia, August 3, 2023:
“In this era of profound transformation, understanding artificial intelligence serves as a gateway to empowerment and triumph for all.”
We owe it to our students to prepare them well for the world of today and tomorrow, not yesterday.

As this will be the final weekly newsletter for 2024, I would like to thank you all for your support of our College throughout the year. Looking ahead, our termly High Five publication will be available in mid-December, showcasing the highlights and successes of this term.

Wishing you the best for the remainder of the year and a restful holiday season.

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

Her eye for detail and love of the season have transformed the front office into a Christmas wonderland, with beautiful decorations that brighten everyone’s day. From twinkling lights to carefully placed holiday accents, her festive touches have created a warm, welcoming atmosphere for students, staff  and visitors alike.

STUDENTS ENJOY NEW LOOK LIBRARY

The very first class to enjoy using the updated space.

Earlier this term, we were thrilled to reopen our newly refurbished library in G Block, welcoming back full classes after two years! The upgraded space has quickly become a vibrant hub for learning and discovery, and it’s fantastic to see students making the most of it.

The library now boasts a fresh colour scheme, new carpet, and a sleek issues desk, creating a modern and inviting atmosphere. A standout feature is the mobile shelving, which can be rearranged to accommodate various uses, including the recent 50th Jubilee Mix and Mingle. This added flexibility ensures the library will remain a dynamic and functional space for years to come.

As part of the move, our library team unpacked over 14,000 books, taking the opportunity to refresh the collection. Many non-fiction titles were carefully culled, and the fiction section was reorganised by genre, making browsing easier and more enjoyable for students. This significant work was led by our Library Manager, Ms Sharon King, and Librarian, Mrs Jane Ryan, with invaluable support from our Library Assistant, Mrs Trudie Adams, who joined the team earlier this year.

Looking ahead to the summer holidays, the library has curated a fantastic selection of books for students to borrow and enjoy over the break. All students returning in 2025 are encouraged to explore these great reads and discover new stories.

It’s wonderful to see our library thriving once again, and we look forward to it continuing to inspire and support our students in the years to come.

SPORTS NEWS

Tania Dalton Foundation Scholarship Recipients

From left: Avah Sila, Levonah Motuliki and Skylah Tainui-Takere

We’re delighted to announce that Yr 12 students,  Avah Sila and Levonah Motuliki have been awarded scholarships as part of the prestigious 2025 Tania Dalton Foundation Scholarship Programme. This programme, launched in 2018, provides a unique three-year journey of support, combining financial assistance, mentorship, and personal development opportunities to help young sportswomen excel both in their chosen sports and in life.

Avah was recognised for her outstanding achievements in Netball and Touch, while Levonah’s talent in Rugby Union earned her a place in this elite programme. Both athletes join an exceptional cohort of recipients from across New Zealand, continuing a proud tradition of Howick College representation. Past scholarship recipients include Luísa Togotogorua (2018), celebrated for her rugby achievements, and Isla Norman-Bell (2018), a standout in Touch and Rugby Sevens.

We also wish to acknowledge Skylah Tainui-Takere (Yr 13), who recently graduated from the programme after being selected for her success in Touch Rugby. Skylah’s accomplishments highlight the significant impact of this initiative, and we are incredibly proud of her journey.

Avah and Levonah will be inducted into the programme on 3rd December at a special ceremony where they will receive their numbered presentation caps and be officially welcomed into the Tania Dalton Foundation family.

Congratulations to Avah, Levonah, and Skylah on these outstanding achievements, which continue to inspire the Howick College community.

Basketball 3x3 Competition

Last week. our junior basketball teams competed in the 3x3 basketball tournament.

The boys’ team made a strong start, finishing the first day with a 4-1 record, their only loss was to the undefeated team in their pool. Day 2 was more challenging, as the boys ended up going 1-4 ending at 5-5 overall. On the final day, they claimed a 9-3 victory before placing 12th overall after two hard-fought losses.

The girls’ team did extremely well, finishing 4th overall. They particularly impressed in the pool stage with 5 wins and only 2 losses, including a 21-7 victory over Elim College, where the mercy rule ended the game early. In the playoffs, they defeated Kristin College 9-4 but fell to Westlake College 2-7 in the semi-finals. In the 3rd place match, they led until a late injury shifted the game, finishing 6-7.

Well done to all the players and a big thank-you to the coaches and supporters who made this experience possible.

Auckland Touch Competition

Our Junior Boy's and Girl's Touch teams attend the Auckland Touch Championship.

Friday, 22nd November was an exciting day for Howick College as our Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Touch teams as they headed off to the Auckland Champs at Cox’s Bay Reserve.

The Junior Boys started strong but faced a challenging pool. After a hard-fought game against Auckland Grammar School, they narrowly lost their second match to Mahurangi College by just one try. However, the highlight came in their final pool match against Rosehill College. Trailing 3-1, the boys staged a thrilling comeback, scoring in the final minute to claim a 4-3 victory—a match that had all spectators on the edge of their seats! Meanwhile, the Junior Girls showcased resilience and determination, growing stronger as the day progressed. Their efforts in pool play earned them a spot in the next stage of the competition, where the stakes were higher, and the opposition even tougher.

Although neither team brought home the silverware this year, both displayed exceptional skill, spirit, and sportsmanship, proudly representing Howick College. It was an exceptionally well run competition and a fantastic day out where our players demonstrated great mana and determination as they competed against some of Auckland’s most talented schools.

Congratulations to all our Junior Touch players for their efforts and dedication—your hard work and commitment continue to make us proud!

HOWICK COLLEGE LIBRARY BOOK OF THE WEEK

A Really Short History of Words
by Bill Bryson

Every day, you do something incredible, and I bet you barely ever think about it- you speak. Ever wondered why the English language turned out how it did? Why do we have so many different words for just one thing? And why are so many words spelt the same but sound different? In this beautifully illustrated journey through word and rhyme - and even a few jokes - Bill Bryson will teach you how the English language came to be (clue- lots of invasions) and what makes it a rich and beautiful thing (lots of Shakespeare). Get ready . . . because the story of the English language is an EXTRAORDINARY one.

Adapted from Bill Bryson’s book ‘Mother Tongue’

*The library in G Block is now open. Hours are from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Monday to Friday.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Last Week for All Saints' Christmas Lunch Appeal

Exciting news from the Howick community this December! All Saints Church is continuing its "Christmas Lunch on Jesus" initiative to support families in need of a festive meal. On December 23rd, special boxes will be packed and delivered, containing everything needed for a Christmas lunch—meat, vegetables, drinks, and festive treats.

Since its launch in 2015 with 50 boxes, the initiative has grown significantly. Last year, 305 boxes were delivered to 200 families, providing meals for 1,200 people. We receive many heartfelt messages of gratitude, including: “Thank you for blessing my family with food. May God bless you for your kindness.”

Howick College families have generously donated boxes of chocolates for the hampers over the years. We kindly ask for your support again this year—please drop off a box of chocolates at the student office by December 4th to help make Christmas special for these families.
