Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Orewa,

Ko te tūmanako au kua te pai i a koutou katoa i rā whakatā te Huritau o te Kīngi.
I hope you all had a great King’s Birthday weekend.

Firstly, it is with mixed emotions that I announce that Marara Schreurs, our current Head of Māori, has been recently appointed to Whangaparāoa College as Deputy Principal. We are extremely happy for her appointment, and know she will produce great things for Whangaparāoa College, and continue to progress te ao Māori across the Hibiscus Coast.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a mihi whakatau (welcome) on Thursday 30 May at Te Herenga Waka o Orewa Marae. This was a welcome for all new teachers and support staff within our Kāhui Ako, which were yet to receive a formal welcome at the marae. The hospitality from the haukāinga (hosts) was outstanding. and is a crucial relationship that all schools across the community hold dearly.

On Friday 31 May, all teachers within our Kāhui Ako ki Orewa, had the pleasure of listening to Jay Geldard at the mini conference hosted in the Orewa Arts and Events Centre. Jay is the co-founder and CEO of E Tū Tāngata, a programme having significant impact in communities across Aotearoa New Zealand. His message is about self-esteem, and creating a sense of belonging among students, and rejecting the notion of the ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’. Strengthening our people’ (students and staff) sense of value and purpose is key to living a healthy and successful life, as Steve Hansen (ex All Black Coach, endorser of E Tū Tāngata) states “value is one of the core principles that makes us get up in the morning and feel good about ourselves”.

Since the commencement of my role at Orewa College, I have been meeting individually with teachers and support staff at the kura (school), to build relationships, and to get a better sense of the school. Subsequently, there have been common trends surfacing, where staff have stated; students are outstanding, staff are welcoming and supportive, it is a great school with great opportunities. The staff I have met with so far are immensely proud of Orewa College, and hope to see a continuation in strengthening leadership opportunities at the school.

In my last principal pānui (newsletter), I mentioned that we will be continuing to ‘sweat the small stuff’, in the pursuit of strengthening a culture of excellence at Orewa College. These basic standards are non-negotiable and apply to all facets of the school, including behaviour, learning expectations, uniform, punctuality and attendance. Once again, thank you to all our whānau who support us with reinforcing these standards at home, and to our students who are exhibiting the manaaki values every day at Orewa College.

Nāku noa, nā,

Wiri Warriner
Tumuaki | Principal

Lesieli Namoa beautifully represented her Tongan heritage by performing the Tau’olunga. Followed by our Orewa College boys doing an energetic Fijian meke called the "Meda Butu" and the girls took us to Samoa with a traditional Siva dance called the "Pe a e Siva".

Reminder: Car Parking at 50 Centreway Road

A reminder that the car parking at 50 Centreway Road (over Rainbow bridge, the old Council
Buildings/Centrestage Theatre area) is now privately owned.

Concerns have been raised about students and caregivers unauthorised use of car parks in this area. Please refrain from parking here, as in future vehicles will be towed.  This is particularly noticeable around pick-up and drop-off times.

Auckland Museum Experience

We found the Jurassic and World War II displays at the Auckland Museum to be very cool.

The museum allowed all of us students to look at carefully displayed historical items and fossils, including dinosaur skeletons. We were taken back in time as we explored the displays, learning about the Jurassic animals that once lived on the earth.

We had an amazing and educational experience visiting the museum and it was very fun.
