Week 8 of term 3 celebrates Matariki, which will be a national holiday for the first time.It is a chance and opportunity to reflect on who we are, whanau that have passed, and renewal and planning for opportunities in the future.
Our College has embraced this celebration at this time with the blessing of our new teaching block of 4 maths classrooms - Te Whare Ararau - many ways to solve problems and make connections and relationships. Our blessing was led by Warahi and Linda Paki, our kaumatua and Kuia, at dawn on Wednesday. Students, staff, whanau, and members of our community including Councillors Linda Cooper and Shane Henderson shared a lovely beginning for this new facility here at Waitākere College.
Each department has also been celebrating themes around the Matariki messages as part of their courses this week and next week. There have been Ki o Rahi games as well as a Block Challenge which includes researching their assigned star and decorating based on their research. We get the chance to reflect on academic progress with Parent/Whanau evenings on Thursday 30/6 and Tuesday 5/7. This is a chance to reflect, regroup and renew plans for us as teachers, but most importantly students for the rest of this year. Use the celebration of Matariki to reflect on how you are going, renew some goals and plans for the year, and connect with whanāu and teachers.
