Celebrations of Diversity.

Happy 60th Anniversary Sāmoa! June 1 this year is 60 years since Sāmoa gained Independence. Our Sāmoan staff, students and aiga took the opportunity to unite and celebrate their heritage here in our College and on Rathgar Rd. Sāmoa has a rich history in the Pacific and here in New Zealand. The contribution that Sāmoans and Pasifika peoples, in general, has made to our society, making us stronger as a nation. Fa'a fetai Lava.

We celebrate Queen Elizabeth the 2nd's 70-year reign as Head of The Commonwealth this weekend. What an awe-inspiring and outstanding life of service she continues to achieve.
In two weeks' time, we get to celebrate Matariki, our winter New Year. This is again another chance to celebrate our rich indigenous history and provide an opportunity to reflect on the years past, people lost, and aspire to new opportunities so our country can grow stronger with better understanding.

We are a diverse nation and as an island nation all of us have travelled here in some form of waka with the hope of being better than before.
I was able to visit my own ancestral home in Arrowtown last week, where my great grandfather migrated in 1875 from Limerick in Ireland for a better life here in NZ. I am always in awe of the risks, challenges, opportunities and optimism that made them stronger people.
The great migrations, firstly of Maori, and then our many other groups that make up this great diverse nation have a history that is always inspiring and challenging at the same time.
This generation of our rangitahi will also get to celebrate the diversity of this nation but also be better informed with the new New Zealand Histories Curriculum in place that we have been using over the years, but formalized this year.
A Habit of Mind of successful people is to celebrate with wonderment and awe of our cultural history and others in this diverse nation.

Ngā mihi
