It takes a village to raise a child |
Our three pillars emphasise the importance of every aspect of our student’s lives, that of teachers, whānau and community. This is something that we believe strengthens the opportunities of our rangitahi. With input from the many different people in young people’s lives, there is always hope for a bright and fulfilling future. That is why the Kahui Ako or Community of Learners was formed, to deepen the relationships and approaches between all schools within our local area.
This week and over the coming weeks, I have had the pleasure of taking a selection of Year 9 and 10 students as well as two prefects to visit a number of our feeder schools in preparation for 2024 enrolments. It is a wonderful reminder of the journey of students from entering primary school in Year 1 until they leave secondary school in Year 13, and the relationships that have been created along the way. There are many people who will influence that journey and provide support. However, the impact that whānau makes cannot be underestimated as this creates a sense of whanaungatanga and belonging in terms of relationships within the family and community.
We all have significant people in our lives that make/ made the difference to us as people, and teachers often feature in young people's lives as one of those significant role models. Personally, I remember my primary school teacher who I had for only one year. She had patience, took the time to show the different approaches I could take so as to learn better, encouraged me even though I wasn’t the best academically at the time, and made every kid in the class feel seen. Never did she make us feel like a failure even when we got something wrong but showed us that it was an opportunity to learn. Most of all she was firm, fair and fun. My friends and I continue to talk of her fondly to this day. So, I encourage all of us to remember those who are or who have been our support network/ significant impact person and to reach out and thank them. Gratitude and appreciation are infectious and you get back what you give out.
