Success in 3 parts - Ability, Diligence, and Time.
Recent studies have confirmed what we all know. Academic success and success, in general, rely on three components - Ability, Diligence, and Time. The balance of these three components is not equal as it depends in a large part on the ability in the specific area to be measured. For my purposes, I am focussing on academic success but think about how transferable these three components are in other areas of your life.
Ability Only a rare group of people, about 3% of the population is naturally very bright. If you are lucky enough to be naturally bright by the happenstance of your genes. Enjoy it. The rest of your ability is a result of the wide reading, writing, and maths experiences you have grown up with. Keep this up and you will be rewarded. It means you have to spend less time on tasks to achieve. For the rest of us, our only way forward to achieve is to put more effort into...
Diligence For us, this is about manawanui - never giving up. Attending lessons, knowing the task or learning objectives for each lesson, having the correct equipment to do the work, and checking you have learned it. Testing yourself and learning from test results. Not walking away if you don't achieve. Never give up, never give up, never give up.
Time Each of us needs to put the time in to achieve and reward our ability. Most of us need to commit more time to learning. Use your planner/diary to set and organise time for tasks. Know when assessments are due and give yourself time to complete them. Know when tutorials are offered i.e. Wednesdays weekly to get more time on the task with teacher help. Know that assessment week is Week 9 and take the time to prepare. Most of us need to put the time in with the mahi around diligence to reward our ability. Get the balance of these three components; ability, diligence, and time right, to be the best you can be.
