The Academy Awards of Hope - New Zealander of the Year |
As the Principal of Waitākere College, I was privileged to attend the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards in Auckland on Thursday night. I was representing the Achieving at Waitākere (A@W) group of secondary school principals as a finalist in the NZ Community of the Year Award for the work A@W does to keep students engaged in education once they are on the edge of our mainstream education system. It was nice to be recognised and be a finalist in this category for making a positive difference to kids who have drifted out of our schools but are still in our community and giving them hope and a pathway to better themselves.
It was an inspiring evening seeing so many incredible people being acknowledged for the work they do and making huge differences to people in our communities and around the country. Here are a few of the statements said by some of these (usually unsung) wonderful leaders in our community.
- " Have an enthusiasm for life, have an enthusiasm for learning."
- " No one should be seen as less worthy."
- "There is lots of privilege but also a lot of opportunity."
- "You don't have to be magic, you just have to be available."
- "To change people's worlds, you need to change people's hearts."
- "Knowledge that isn't shared, isn't knowledge."
- "We all whakapapa to Papatuanuku."
- "Tell the truth faster and it will get you out of trouble faster."
- "We all whakapapa to Papatuanuku."
It was an inspiring event and felt like the Academy Awards of Hope and Happiness.
