Ni Hao, Greetings

I am not quite sure where Term 3 has gone, as we enter the tenth and final week of term.

Last week, senior school students had their grading exams and these went very well.  Overall students appeared calm, well prepared and focussed.  In addition to these examinations, a number of Departments held practical workshops for students to spend time continuing with significant internal assessment based projects.  During this week, the students in Years 7-10 showed a high degree of maturity and manaaki, by respecting the designated work spaces and examination rooms allocated to senior students.

By the end of this week, staff will have completed reports for all students in all year groups.  This is an ideal time for yourselves and students to reflect on their current reality and develop specific learning/organisational strategies as required.

ILT teachers will be focussing on supporting all students on their learning pathways.

Today students are being acknowledged for their involvement in our full range of sports codes, in the annual Sports' Awards events.  It is always enjoyable for myself to witness the impressive participation levels in sports and to celebrate outstanding successes of which there have been many.  Your ongoing support in this area of the college is very much appreciated.

I hope that your family gets to enjoy some quality time together over the term break.

Ngā mihi

Māori Language Week

Last week we immersed ourselves in the celebration of Māori Language Week.  Below is just a small sample of the many projects and activities that took place around the college.

Mrs Nola's Year 7 class used an interactive place names website and then cut out and put the correct names on the NZ map as a great learning activity.

Reporting Absences

A big thank you to parents and caregivers for changing so quickly to use the new 'School Bridge' app for reporting absences to us.

When you use the app, it not only fills in all of your child's details, it allows the absence to be imported directly into the system.

You can also look at previous absence reports and request 'exit passes' if your child needs to leave school during the day.     APP download instructions HERE.

Rugby - Paeroa Trip

Late in August, a group of our aspiring rugby players had the opportunity to travel down to Paeroa to play the Thames Valley Swamp Foxes U16's Heartland side. Our team was composed of players from our 2023 U15, U16 and 1st XV sides, and their team composed of the best U16 players from around the region.

The game was played at the Paeroa Old Boys Rugby Club, a beautiful country paddock with a backdrop of the Coromandel Ranges. Weather was perfect and the boys were absolutely fizzing to get a taste of open-weight and representative level competition.

The game showcased some great structure and exciting running rugby. Our OC boys were finding and exploiting space off set-piece with ease, and playing structurally sound rugby all around the park. Many exciting moments occurred with our backs finding space out wide off the back of big up-front carries. Mistakes were the enemy of the team however and drop-balls stopped us from taking advantage of a number of opportunities.

Thames Valley were organised and clinical, with some super speedy outside backs who managed to get into space and run in a number of tries. They capitalized on our mistakes and scored a number of end-to-end tries which slowed down the momentum of our play. At the final whistle, the score ended 32-0 to Thames Valley. A great result for them as they rip into their representative season.

This game was an opportunity for these boys to play together for the first time and start to build the culture going into '24. We couldn't be prouder of the individual performances and how the players stepped up to face a high level of competition. Players and coaches now have the opportunity to reflect on the game through some professional footage provided by ex-OC student Matt Webster. These reviews will help to feed planning and preparation for 1st XV rugby next year. A massive thank you to Matt for the work put in.

Lastly, a huge thank you to the sponsors for the trip, Orewa Car Services and Atlas Concrete. Without the support from these companies this trip would never have been able to happen.

Careers Hub

As we near the end of Term 3, all Year 13 students who are expecting to get accommodation at university next year should have completed their applications, as they close within the next few days (if they haven't they need to see us in careers asap).

In line with this, Course Planning is happening this week for UoA & AUT and then next term for the last 3 universities. All Year 13 students have the opportunity to speak with and get assistance with enrolment for next year.

Girls in Tech ran an experience day last week in conjunction with ShadowTech.
We took nine Year 9 girls along to Lexel Systems and they learnt that there was a lot more to working in IT than just coding & programming. They enjoyed their day and now have more to think about regarding possible pathways in the future.

In the upcoming holidays it is a great opportunity for students to find some work experience to gain a better understanding of the world of work. The Ministry of Education says 'Connecting with employers helps young people understand the experiences and employability skills that are valued now and will be valuable in a fast-changing world.' So a day or more experience and conversations will be valuable for each young person.

Next term we have Year 10 Tasters where students get an opportunity to learn new skills, explore & learn about a career interest & check out a tertiary provider.
These are Hands-on, fun, learning experiences. More information will be presented to students next term.

NZ Experience - International Students

On Tuesday our NZ Experience class visited Kelly Tarlton's in the morning and then making the most of the glorious sunshine we had lunch up at Bastion Point and enjoyed a walk down to Mission Bay beach and along the waterfront.

Many of our International Students are here for only a short time to experience New Zealand and therefore do not sit the NCEA grading exams. Instead we go exploring spots in Auckland.
On Wednesday we visited the Auckland museum which tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people.

Thursday's trip was to Tree Adventures and the Parakai Hot Pools and on Friday a planting day on the sand dunes at Te Haruhi Beach, Shakespeare Regional Park.  It was great to see the students learning about our sealife, our history and challenging themselves on the High Ropes.
It was awesome that they could "give back" with the conservation of the sand dunes.
Check out their work when you are next at the Park.

We are excited to announce a major upgrade to a key outdoor area for students - this includes widening walkways, new outdoor seating, large shade sails and new plantings.
Fencing is being started on Thursday this week and the work will take most of Term 4.

Driveway 2 will be completely closed, car parks will be very limited and students' access will be affected at different times, please see the map here in this LINK for further details.

Parents/Caregivers that need to collect their child from the nurse may enter down driveway 3 and follow the sign for the designated nurses car parks.

Parents, guardians and the wider school community, Orewa College would love to hear about the individuals or groups that you have seen showing respect for themselves, respect for others or respect for our environment.

Year 7 Forensic Scientists Visit

This week, we had Mark and Allie, who are two forensic scientists, come to our school
and teach us all about their job.

These scientists taught us how to identify fingerprints, find clues at a crime scene, and even how to solve one! Our students were given a crime and had to find the culprit. The scene was really well placed and carefully thought out, making for an amazing experience.

Our students learned so much from them and some of us might even want that job when we grow up. Once again, a huge thank you to Mark and Allie for this amazing opportunity.

We were very fortunate to win a forensics kit from Forensic Insights, which will help us include forensics as part of our science programmes.

During this week, the Yr 7 classes have been working on forensics. Forensics is all about crime investigation.

Our presenter had been in the police for over 20 years, which included Scotland Yard and the New Zealand Police force, as a forensic scientist. He showed us how easy it was to find someone's fingerprints in under 8 seconds as well as how our fingerprints stay on file for 100 years. DNA is a big part of forensics so he explained what DNA is and what it stands for–deoxyribonucleic acid. As well as showing us many different brushes made out of many extraordinary things such as glass, horse, camel, duck and squirrel and we learnt that they were each used for many different purposes.

He showed us how to dust for fingerprints. This was demonstrated by using a cup where we were shown how to hold it correctly and how to properly apply the magnetic power with the squirrel hair brush.  We then transferred the fingerprint onto a piece of card secured by tape so that we could identify the suspect.

This session has inspired me personally to think more thoroughly, to be creative, to problem solve, to have open ideas and to be a critical thinker.
