19 February 2024

Kia ora,

Our college has just been a vibrant, thriving community this past week and I am positive it will remain so.

Last week was House Week and saw the re introduction of a tuakana-teina concept in our House morning PE programme. Year 7 and 8 students working along side our Manukura, Senior Student Leaders and staff was fantastic to watch.  It was also great to see the comeback of Performing Arts Week.  It was a pleasure to watch some outstanding performances and I was impressed with the support from audiences.

The extra curricular activities are off to a fantastic start and there are more to come.  From sports teams to academic clubs, from performing arts groups to cultural groups - there is something for everyone.  Please encourage your student to get involved and explore interests outside the classroom.  It is crucial to stay up to date with all student notices.

This week is full with a Gateway Evening, Duke of Edinburgh training day, Band Camp, History Trip to the Bay of Islands and numerous sporting and performing arts auditions, trials, rehearsals and practises.

Update on the government legislation. We are working though procedures and consulting with other schools, who have already brought the “no phones in schools” rule in.  I can tell you that at the start of Term 2 there will be no phones out of bags from entry into school through to the end of the school day.  There will be exemptions and those exemptions and applications for them, will be published next week.  Along side all of this will be the possible consequences of failing to comply with the school rule.

Our 2023 NCEA scholarship results and endorsement data have been released and I would like to acknowledge and congratulate these students for their success.

Ngā mihi

Acting Principal

This week signifies the beginning of Career Conversations with Year 13 students, one on one in the Careers Hub.

Students have been asked to fill in a questionnaire to assist with the conversation around what they are thinking of doing when they leave school. This will provide some assistance as we talk through an action plan for each of them. It is time for Year 13 students to give some thought to their pathway beyond school.

There are also various opportunities advertised weekly in the school notices regarding upskilling, information gathering and courses for senior students during the term and the school holidays - please encourage your students to speak with someone in the Careers Hub if they are interested.

Level 2 Wero White Water Trip

Last Thursday, 80 Level 2 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Wero White Water Park.

The day began with anticipation as students geared up for the thrilling experience ahead. Guided by experienced instructors, they navigated through the rushing waters, their laughter echoing across the river as they embraced the challenges of the course.

Despite the excitement, the journey was not without its obstacles. Some rafts capsized in the turbulent waters, adding an unexpected twist to the adventure.

However, these moments of adversity only served to strengthen the bonds between classmates as they worked together to right their rafts and continue the journey.

One of the highlights of the day was the descent down man-made waterfalls, where students experienced an exhilarating rush of adrenaline as they plunged into the churning waters below.

This breathtaking experience not only provided a thrilling adventure but also served as a valuable lesson in facing fears and embracing challenges head-on.

Throughout the day, students also had the opportunity to learn about risk management as they navigated the rapids and negotiated obstacles. Understanding the importance of communication and teamwork, they demonstrated maturity and responsibility beyond their years.

As the day came to a close, students returned from their adventure with smiles on their faces and memories that would last a lifetime. The trip to Wero White Water Park was not just an opportunity for thrills and excitement but also a chance for students to learn valuable life lessons and create lasting friendships.
