Onehunga High School News

Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Onehunga High School

The school has settled into a strong rhythm of learning and it has been encouraging to see students engaged in their studies. Members of the Senior Leadership Team have been visiting classrooms and have been impressed by the high levels of engagement and participation. It is clear that students are embracing the learning opportunities available to them and making a positive start to the academic year.

A special acknowledgment to our Peer Support Leaders and Prefects, who have been instrumental in helping new students transition smoothly into school life. Their leadership and guidance have ensured that our newest members feel welcomed and supported.

Last week’s Whānau Evening was a great success. It was a pleasure to connect with our families as they heard from senior leaders, Deans, and Kaitiaki teachers. The turnout was excellent, and it was great to see such strong engagement from our community. Given the level of attendance, planning has already begun to ensure future events can accommodate everyone comfortably.

Beyond the classroom, it is fantastic to see students making the most of the wider curriculum opportunities. Sports teams are underway with their training, and Polyfest practices and Kapa Haka sessions have begun in earnest. Clubs and other co-curricular activities are also taking shape, providing students with a range of ways to get involved and contribute to the vibrant life of the school.

We look forward to another productive fortnight ahead and appreciate the continued support from students, staff, and whānau in making this a successful start to the year.

Have a great weekend

Ngā mihi nui

It would be easy to assume that classes finish for the day, after the final bell. This could not be further from the truth. Students can be found participating in co-curricular activities in every corner of the school.

Sports News

The start of Term 1 is always a busy time for sports and this year has been no exception. To ensure that all students can settle into their routines effectively, some programmes have had a delayed start. One such programme is the Junior Sports Academy, which has been slightly pushed back to accommodate these adjustments.

Sign-ups for the academy have been open, and we encourage all interested students to register before the deadline on Friday, 21st February. Following this, information regarding trials and specific details for each sporting code will be sent out to participants.

The Junior Sports Academy (previously J.E.T.S) provides a fantastic opportunity for our junior students to develop their skills, build teamwork, and engage in competitive sport while upholding our WAKA values. We appreciate the enthusiasm from students and the support from whānau as we prepare for an exciting season ahead.

For any questions, please reach out to the Sports Department. We look forward to seeing our young athletes in action!
