Term 2, Week 8, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

This week, our college has observed Pride Week. This annual event in the school's calendar recognises our rainbow students, staff, and whānau. The week is a celebration intended for everyone within the LGBTQIA+ community and non-rainbow allies. For us at Howick College, it has been a time to highlight the importance of inclusion, diversity, and acceptance.

A key strategic objective of the college is to ensure that all students and staff feel that they belong and are valued. A keen sense of belonging is vital to a student's well-being and therefore increases their ability to engage and learn.

The Rainbow flag flies proudly above Howick College.

All young people, regardless of their race, sexuality, sex, gender, or ethnicity, have a right to receive a quality education free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Discrimination and bullying based on harmful assumptions about people's diverse genders, sex characteristics, and sexualities are still all too common in New Zealand schools. In 2021, the National Youth Health and Well-being Survey found rainbow youth were more likely to experience bullying than the majority of young people.

Pride Week has empowered our rainbow students to challenge rainbow-focused bullying and has provided a reminder to everyone to continue our efforts to foster a wider inclusive school community by increasing awareness.

I am very proud of the inclusive culture and the sense of belonging we have cultivated at our college. While we have made significant progress, there is always room for improvement. Together, we can strive for even greater inclusivity and understanding as we continue to make Howick College a welcoming place for all

Have a great weekend.

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

LOOKING BACK

Evolution of the Howick College Crest

The original school crest (left) was derived from the old Howick Borough crest. When Howick no longer stood as a separate ward, it was considered time for an update. With the rebranding of the school in 2006, a new crest was rolled out to better reflect our school's character - namely a progressive, innovative, forward-looking school. The new crest retained important historical links to the area. The waves, taken from the old crest, symbolised the school's proximity to the sea. The central waka shape, while echoing the sailing ship of the old crest and its links to the area's Fencible history, was a more appropriate New Zealand icon. The three paddles represented the three key partners in moving the waka forward: students, parents, and teachers. The flashes of red at the top indicated forward growth and movement towards the future. The colours of the original Howick College brand - blue, grey, red, and yellow - were retained from the old crest.

Under Principal Iva Ropati, our new vision was implemented, and our values were updated to the current 4Cs: Courtesy, Commitment, Curiosity, and Courage. In this reimagined version of our crest, the paddles represent our core values as propelling the waka forward, and an additional paddle was added to represent our 4Cs. The red bolts now symbolise inspiration, and the waka itself represents our school community moving forward together.

SUCCESS AT WEARABLE ARTS COMPETITIONS

ShowQuest Toi

Clockwise from top left: "Anticlockwise", "Circus Show", "What the Stars See", and "Remnants of Hope".

Last Friday night, our talented young designers exhibited five stunning creations in the 2024 ShowQuest Toi Wearable Art Competition held at the Aotea Centre in the CBD. This vibrant wearable arts event, run in collaboration with World of Wearable Art (WOW), challenges solo students and groups to design "fantastical creations" with a unique set of marking criteria. We are thrilled to announce that three of our entries were awarded "Best Use of Inventive Materials."

Congratulations to the following:
Olivia Gu
and Arna Vincent for their innovative costume (featured below), "Anticlockwise".
Amy Feldtman
and Kylo Clifford for their creation, "Circus Show," featuring a face made from one-way mirror plastic.
Harnain Dhaliwa
l for her entry "Remnants of Hope," with a front circle that cleverly changes and lights up.

Congratulations also go to Casey Ferguson and ex-student Sophie Hunapo's design, "What the Stars
See". The pair received the "Excellence in Construction" award for their colourful garment which was entirely and beautifully crocheted.

All these fabulous creations will now go on to be judged at the national level. We wish our talented students the very best!

Eye On Nature

Designers Olivia Gu and Arna Vincent (model)

Last Thursday night, the Due Drop Events Centre in Manukau was buzzing with creativity and excitement as students from all over Auckland presented their weable arts creations at the 2024 Eye on Nature Wearable Arts competition. Our talented Howick College designers brought 6 spectacular creations to the stage based on this year's theme, "Act Local - Growing with Te Taiao.”

We are proud to announce that Olivia Gu and Arna Vincent's innovative design, "Anticlockwise," earned them THIRD prize in the secondary division! Their stunning creation featured a moving clock arm that synchronized with the cogs in the back of the costume. Such an impressive display of artistry and ingenuity. Congratulations Olivia and Arna on your well-deserved achievement!

PASTRY CLASS A HIT WITH STAFF

From left:  Ms Price, Ms Clearwater and Mrs Al-Obidi hone their pastry skills.

Continuing our theme of lifelong learning, HoD of Food Technology, Mrs Rebecca Roberts, ran another very successful pastry evening for staff. Twenty five keen bakers tackled puff pastry, making apple galettes, the most fantastic chocolate eclairs as well as tomato tarts and other delicious morsels.

It was wonderful to have such a wide range of cross-curricular teachers and support staff join together to give something new a try. Mrs Roberts was thrilled to hear stories of staff taking these new skills home to share with family and friends, with great success.

BYOD LAPTOP EXPECTATIONS REMINDER

All students are expected to have a suitable BYOD laptop for use in the classroom and at home. Our teachers prepare lessons with the assumption that these devices are available, and without them, it can be more challenging for students to learn.

We understand that 'things happen,' and therefore, we have a supply of laptops and chargers that we can loan to students on a daily basis. However, in recent weeks, we have seen a significant surge in demand for these devices, far beyond our capacity to support.

To provide your child with the best learning opportunities, please make sure they bring a fully charged laptop and its charger to school every day. If the device is damaged, please have it repaired promptly. If there are any issues with the device, the school's IT Department is happy to assist with resolving them.

If you have difficulty providing or repairing a laptop, please contact your child’s Dean as the first point of contact. A description of suitable devices can be found on our website.

HOWICK COLLEGE LIBRARY - BOOK OF THE WEEK

Viking Women: Life and Lore by Lisa Hannett

Let's travel in time together, a thousand or so years back, and meet Viking women in their hearth-lit world. How did these medieval viragoes live, love and die? How can we encounter them as flesh-and-blood beings with fears and feelings - not just as names in sagas or runes carved into stone? In this groundbreaking work, Lisa Hannett lifts the veil on the untold stories of wives and mothers, girls and slaves, widows and witches who sailed, settled, suffered, survived - and thrived - in a society that largely catered to and memorialised men. Hannett presents the everyday experiences of a compelling cast of women, all of whom are resourceful and petty, hopeful and jealous, and as fabulous and flawed as woman are today.

This non-fiction book is available for borrowing from the temporary library in L6.

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT - HOMESTAYS NEEDED

Do you have room in your family for an international student? Hosting can be a very rewarding experience for both the student and the host family. With more international students wanting to come to New Zealand and study at Howick College, we are currently looking for warm welcoming families or couples interested in becoming hosts.

• Homestay families need to speak English (some Mandarin speaking families also required)
• Applicants must be prepared to undergo police vetting
• Students must be able to access Howick College easily (within school zone is preferred)
• Fortnightly payments of $680 per student.

If this could be you, please contact our Homestay Coordinator - [email protected]

Well Deserved Win for 1st XI Football Girls

Our 1st XI Girls' Football team had an exhilarating match this week claiming their first league victory of the season against Macleans College with a well deserved 2-1 win! Our girls displayed skill and determination, establishing a 2-0 lead and maintaining their dominance throughout the game. Special congratulations to Olivia Cox for scoring both goals; her performance was outstanding.

This victory comes after a challenging start to the season, with our girls facing tough outcomes against EGGS, Takapuna Grammar, Diocesan, and BDSC over the past month. Despite these challenges, they have consistently shown outstanding effort and motivation in every game.

Looking ahead, our team is excited about the remaining league games against Onehunga, Rangitoto, and Westlake Colleges, as well as the upcoming Winter tournament in Taupo. It's going to be an exciting journey, and we have full confidence that our girls are ready to shine!
