Kia ora koutou,

This week sees the return to the college of those students in the senior school that were involved in the National Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Week.

These students represented Orewa College with pride and passion, from Nelson to Auckland in a range of sporting codes.

Yesterday, over 120 students from Years 7/8 departed from Orewa College to compete in Tauranga in a very wide spectrum of sports at the 2023 AIMS games.  This is an amazing event which could not occur without the considerable support of staff and family members.  I wish all of the participants the very best in the various competitions, throughout this week.

Grading examinations and course workshops for students in Year 11-13, occur from Friday, 8th of September until Friday 15th of September.  Staff are fully committed to preparing our students for these important assessments.  A reminder that students need to attend in full school uniform, but are not required at school when there is no assessment specific to their individual timetable.

Reports are being completed for all students in all year groups and will be available at the end of this term.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the House 'Wearable Arts' and/or Dance Festival last week.  Both were impressive events and very well supported by the wider school community.

Have a great week.
Greg Pierce
Principal

Orewa College Dance Festival

Orewa College's annual Dance Festival was held over the weekend.

36 dances were performed showcasing work completed within the curriculum, senior assessments and also performances created from the extra curricular program.

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful dancers who should be proud of their achievements and also to our light and sound operator and plotters Jacob and Chantelle.

Thank you to all of our parents who have supported us with early mornings and weekend rehearsals.  Miss Woodroffe and myself (Mrs Becky Hilliar) could not have been more proud of our students.

The videos are available on the classroom page.

Year 8 Māra Hūpara Trip

Last Tuesday, four Year 8 classes visited a Māra Hūpara (Traditional Māori playground) in Underwood Park, Mt Roskill.

The purpose of this trip was to gain insight into the elements of a Māra Hūpara and its construction.  In this way, we we can repurpose the trees that will be felled to make way for much needed drainage between the school library and the senior tuck shop, to increase the size of the playground we have.

This was a very positive experience and the buses were full with very tired students on the way back!

European History & Classical Studies Trip - Quiz Night

The students lucky enough to be going on the European History and Classical Studies trip over the school break would like to extend their thanks to all those involved in the successful quiz night last week.

Around one hundred supporters of the students crammed into the Northern Union Gastro Pub in Silverdale where owner Glenn was our MC for the evening. He and his staff were excellent hosts, providing an opportunity for our students to gain the funds for a personalised travel jacket and entry fees into an ancient Roman bathing complex north of Rome.

In all, the students' efforts and generous supporters raised almost $3,500.00, meaning we also have a little spare so that a photo book can be created for each student upon our return.
Look out for our experiences in an upcoming edition of the High Tide in Term 4.

Trees for Survival Planting Day

Twenty eight, Year 7 and 8 students headed out to a dairy farm at Ahuroa.
The farm had been badly affected by flooding earlier in the year and our students planted over 700 native trees on a river bank.

The trees were grown here at school over the last year.
The planting team worked really hard and then were rewarded with a delicious hot lunch by the land owners.

Wearable Arts 2023

The Wearable Art House competition is one of the most anticipated events in the house year! Such an amazing event, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship of our designers.
Up-cycling old materials and turning them into amazing garments.

The theme and criteria is turning trash into fashion. Use recyclable items and construct them to make a garment of sound construction.

In today's world, we have a lot of items that we throw out, whether they are actual rubbish, or just being replaced by something new. The students had to think outside the box about what we consider trash. Garments were made from various items such as old plant containers, an old tent, and even a year's supply of chip packets.

The craftsmanship and originality of these garments were so impressive that they could be on a worldwide stage.

Brooklyn Hope-Jensen was the winner for the Year 7 & 8 competition with a garment called ‘Lest we Forget’.

After entering almost every year and winning the last two years in a row Amy Blomquist took out senior 1st place with her garment titled ‘tent’.

Maria Walker-Kinnell and her garment titled ‘To bees or not to bees’  and Abby Birks with her garment ‘Senbazuru (1000 paper cranes)’ tied in the year 9 and 10 section.

Hope everyone had fun making their outfits, you should all be extremely proud of all the effort and craftsmanship involved.

Below is a selection of the many other talented entries.

Careers Hub

Last week we had the opportunity to take Year 11 Pasifika students along to a day at Massey University to the PILOT (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) programme.

The purpose of PILOT is 'To foster & develop the successful participation of Pacific Island Students in Education and Careers Pathway.' There was a Career Expo covering many training areas, not just university. The girls that attended had a great time also hearing from John Paul Foliaki who stars in Red, White & Brass and doing some hands-on workshops.

The school regularly has opportunities for students in various areas and reaches out via daily notices and emails to relevant student groups.
On Wednesday this week we have Victoria University in for Course Planning for Year 13 students who are considering studying there next year. This will be in the Careers Hub in the ILT block on Wednesday.

Currently we are working our way through all Year 12 students and hope to have seen every student before the end of the year.
Gateway interviews for those students who have applied will be during the next couple of weeks. Students need to watch their emails for more information.
