Orewa College News

High Tide Newsletter

Tai Pari Niureta

12 June 2023

Kia ora koutou,

I have received several messages from our Orewa College Community regarding the current PPTA Industrial Action which is occurring for these 3 weeks until the end of this term.
Unfortunately this is unsettling and disruptive to all key stakeholders including parents/caregivers, students and staff.  The other key point to note is that this is a national collective action and one which is completely outside of individual secondary schools control.  As a college we are doing everything we can to ensure that students continue to receive as many opportunities as possible in these circumstances to produce positive outcomes and results.  At this stage all calendared events are still occurring.  If you require a student who is in Year 11-13 to come on site on their rostered day/s off to work independently using college facilities, please email myself directly.

The college recently received communications from a number of parents/caregivers (10%) and students (6%) regarding queries over the recently introduced ILT/Academic Conferences initiative.  I can assure you that a significant amount of staff time and focus occurred in 2022 in preparation for this, as is the case for any significant whole school initiative.  The average turnout in the traditional parent/teacher evening has been between 30% and 40%, since 2019.  70% of parents and students successfully completed this year's 'Academic Conferences'.  Staff, student and parent feedback was positive and summarised in the High Tide Newsletter of 15 May 2023.  The Board of Trustees support this initiative and will continue to monitor and evaluate its effectiveness, as it does with any significant whole school initiative.

Your ongoing feedback is very much appreciated and valued.

Spirit of Adventure Trust Trip

Last week a group of intrepid year 10's and Mr Hawke ,set sail on the Spirit of New Zealand.

We had a series of amazing experiences around the Hauraki Gulf. These included watching dolphins under the bowsprit, climbing the mast, 6.30am swims, and visiting some beautiful out of the way places.

We were pushed out of our comfort zones and made many new friends from other schools.
We were all glad to get home but will never forget our Spirit Voyage.

Special Olympics Football

Orewa College ‘Lightening League’ competed in the recent Special Olympics Football competition.  The Team were in good hands with Brian Wilson and Ryan Sam in defence and midfield while our strikers up front Madison Ryan, Trent Robertson and Ben Francis were busy scoring goals.

The Lightening League got progressively better each game, finishing their last game on a high and winning 3-2 against Takapuna Grammar.
All team members worked hard, showed their usual Manaaki towards team mates and the other teams and came home in high spirits. Roll on the next Football skills event in July.

Level 3 Tip Top Trip

It was the Level 3 Business Studies students turn to visit Tip Top and get inside look at an iconic Aotearoa New Zealand business.
The factory tour gave students first-hand context, that they can use as a case study for their examinations.

Second Hand Uniform

House Netball

This year the house system decided to bring back Netball as a house event. These house tournaments run across three lunchtimes for each year's groups (a total of 2 weeks, including lunch and interval).

We started the tournament with year 7 and 8 students. These players were amazing, they came out in mass numbers to play and also support. The hardest job for our house leaders and coaches is trying to get all players on the court.
Nepia House was the winner of the year 7 and 8 tournaments.

Next up were the year 9 and 10 students. Once again houses were not short of players.
In some teams, full-form classes turned up ready to play.
Nepia House was once again the winning house of this tournament.

Finally, we had the seniors, this also included our wonderful staff. These games were fast and intense and a big thank you to our umpires who had the very hard job of controlling these games.
Sheppard House took out the senior competition.

This tournament ran over two weeks, not to mention the practices at lunchtime and before school. A huge thank you to all involved: players, coaches, umpires and house leaders.
What a successful event and if we can have the same sunny weather for next year, that will be amazing!

BP Business Challenge

Ākonga from the Year 10 Business & Accounting classes got the opportunity to participate in the BP Business Challenge, alongside visiting students from Whangaparāoa College.
Experienced presenters from the Young Enterprise Scheme guided the students through a fast paced 2 day event. Teams came up with innovative product ideas, developed a marketing pitch, and presented their business ideas to a panel judges from the local community.
The event was a great success and many students fostered new friendships with the visiting students.
Congratulations to the winning team which included Orewa College students Abby Birks, Alyssa Sou, Lyla Hudson, and Daelani Marsters.

Careers Hub

We have had representatives of 7 of the 8 NZ Universities visit the school to help the Year 12 & 13 students to gain a general understanding of what each offers.
On Monday 19th June Senior students who are interested in the NZ Defence Force have the opportunity to come along to hear more about what they can do within the NZDF including such things as planning search and rescue missions, assembling a real plane, aligning a satellite dish and basic military drill to name just a few.
Year 13 students who are looking to go to university next year should be looking at possible scholarships that they could apply for - we do have a list in the Year 13 Careers Google Classroom of opportunities available. Students are also encouraged to look at the university sites themselves. We will be running a seminar in the next couple of weeks to assist with the process & applications, as well as accommodation for university halls.
MoneyHub has published a money guide for students to give you the tools and information so you can develop a great relationship with money. Check it out HERE

The Level 2 Business Studies teams took their products to market this week, with some setting up stalls at the Orewa Sunday Markets. The mornings were cold but thankfully the sun was shining.

Year 9 Jurassic Art Trip

On Wednesday 7th of June Miss Cannon and Mr Lee, along with the Jurassic Art students, went to the Auckland Museum to study and learn more things about the dinosaurs to help with their studies.
There they met Barbara and Peter, New Zealand’s own t-rexes.
Barbara is a female t-rex and one of only three female t-rex dinosaurs ever found.  She was also found carrying eggs or young and is 11.4 meters in length and 3.4 meters high.
On the other hand Peter is one of the four black t-rexes ever found and injuries were found on him due to attacks.  Peter is almost 11 meters in length and 3 meters high.
According to Student Ryu “Even though there’s a lot of dinosaurs in the Museum, Peter and Barbara were my favorites as they once roamed earth”

Year 7 & 8 Girls & Boys Hockey Zone Day

Last week, our Year 7 & 8 Boys A and Girls A hockey teams each squared off against 14 other North Shore intermediate schools at the North Harbour zone days.
Both teams had great wins in their pools, each winning three games and losing one.
The Boys came second in their pool and their points differential put them into the semi-finals. Their semi-final against Kristin came down to a penalty shootout, which didn’t go our way.
A win in our playoff game put us in 3rd place for the day.
The Girls also came second in their pool and had a respectable points differential - 11 for and 3 against. However, the maths wasn’t on our side and we ended up in a playoff for 5th/6th place - which we won convincingly 4-0.
Our teams are now consistently placing in the top five at zone days, proving they are competing among the best on the North Shore.
We look forward to seeing how these teams go at AIMS - please support their fundraising efforts.

Matariki Ahunga Nui Ceremony

Te Herenga Waka o Orewa Marae warmly invites the Orewa College community to join us for our annual Matariki Ahunga Nui ceremony, which will take place at Orewa Beach (in front of the surf club) on Matariki public holiday, Friday 14th at 6am.
Join us for a special event to celebrate the rising of the Matariki star cluster and the start of the Māori new year.

During the ceremony, we will honour our loved ones who have passed and share mātauranga Māori, including knowledge about the Matariki star cluster and its cultural significance.
This gathering will provide a dedicated moment for reflection and remembrance, where we will collectively name and pay tribute to those who have left us throughout the year.
Should you desire, we warmly encourage you to bring a cherished photograph of your departed loved one to accompany you.

This event is being held outside the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club rain or shine and will start promptly at 6am. We recommend that you wear warm clothes and bring rain gear and a seat if you wish to be comfortable. We will provide a sausage sizzle, hot drinks, and soup.

For catering purposes, if you are interested in attending the event please use this link to register: Matariki Registration Form
