Term 3, Week 7, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

I first experienced Tournament Week as a Year 11 footballer in my school's First XI many years ago. Back then, the school year was divided into three long terms, and Tournament Week took place during the holidays. Since I have never really left school, I’ve been involved in nearly every Tournament Week in some capacity, whether as a student, coach, manager, or school leader. I have always enjoyed it and see immense benefits in Tournament Week that go far beyond the sport being played.

Most teams engage in fundraising activities, which is great for team spirit and teaches students the value of working together towards a common worthwhile goal. While it might seem easier to simply pay for your children to go on these trips, the lesson of earning something through effort is invaluable.

The bus trips, the fun, and the memories made with friends are what students carry with them long after their school days are done. As a teacher, I would be delighted if students remembered every lesson I had carefully prepared, but the reality is they are more likely to remember and cherish the trips around New Zealand, playing sports or participating in school-related activities with their mates.

This week, several of our teams were away for Tournament Week, and they all enjoyed themselves while creating lasting memories. I truly appreciate the families who have worked hard and made sacrifices to allow their children to participate, whether by taking time off work to support, coach, or manage teams. A special thanks to the dedicated staff who put in the time and effort to make this week possible. Together, we have helped our students learn new things, build their capabilities, and create experiences they’ll look back on with fondness in the years to come.

Have a great weekend.

Principal/Tumuaki

LOOKING BACK

1997 - The First Girls' 1st XV Rugby Team

1997 was a momentous year at Howick College with the introduction of the first-ever Girls' XV rugby team. The team initially started with thirty players but quickly dwindled to just seventeen as only the "battle-hardened" survived the physical demands of the sport. Led by captain Shareen Gradwell, the team became more cohesive with coaching support from members of the Boys' 1st XV, Shane Singer and vice-captain Malcolm Taylor, who generously "sacrificed their social lives" to assist the team coach, Ms Barton. Although the girls didn’t win all their games, they had a fantastic time and celebrated their few hard-earned victories.

Sadly, by 2003, the squad had disbanded, and there would not be another Howick College Girls' 1st XV team for over two decades. However, in 2024, under coach Waisake Sotutu, a former Fijian International and Blues player, the newly re-formed Girls' 1st XV made a powerful return to both the provincial and national stage in their inaugural year of competition. After winning the Auckland Secondary Schools' Girls' 1st XV Competition, they went on to defeat Westlake Girls' High School, earning the opportunity to represent the Blues Region at the 2024 1st XV Top 4 National Competition (see more details below).

The success of our 2024 Girls' 1st XV marks a new chapter in Howick College's girls' rugby legacy, inspiring future generations of players to continue the proud tradition.

The team prepares to head off on their 7 hour road trip to Palmerston North.

We are delighted to announce that our 1st XV Rugby Girls have advanced to the finals of the National 1st XV Top 4 Rugby Competition! The girls travelled to Palmerston North on Thursday and faced Christchurch Girls' High School the following day at 11:30am. 1st XI Girls Football Bring Home Silver Medal

Congratulations to our 1st XI Girls' Football team for claiming a well-deserved SECOND place at the Maurice Hulme Tournament in Taupo this week! The team delivered an incredible performance throughout the competition, securing six consecutive wins as they entered the finals against Mount Maunganui College on Friday, 6 September. Although it wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for, finishing second out of a field of 32 teams is a fantastic achievement!

Well done, girls, on a superb effort! Many thanks to coach Brendon White, manager Mel Lockyer, staff helper Tanya Parsons, and all the dedicated parents and supporters who worked behind the scenes to make this tournament and the season such a success.

Our underwater hockey teams wrapped up an unforgettable experience at the 2024 Underwater Hockey Secondary School Nationals, displaying outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication from start to finish. For many of our junior players, this event offered an exciting introduction to national competition, while for some of our senior players, it marked a memorable, yet bittersweet, final chapter in their school tournament careers.

  • Junior Open UWH Team: Finished in 8th place and awarded the Fair Play Trophy for exemplary sportsmanship.
  • Reilee Butcher: Awarded MVP for the Junior Open division.

These achievements would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the teams' managers, Craig and Morwenna, and the coaching team—Sam Marshall, Phoebe Ata, Mollie McHale, Juliet Curwood (all past students), and Joel Samuel. A special thank you to Hannah Curwood for her invaluable help in refereeing, as well as to our wonderful parents, whose unwavering support was essential throughout the tournament. Thanks also to Mrs Blignaut for stepping in as teacher support over the weekend.

This week, our 1st XI Girls' Hockey team proudly represented Howick College at the Chica Gilmer Trophy competition in Whangārei. HOWICK COLLEGE LIBRARY BOOK OF THE WEEK

The Last Secret Agent by Pippa Latour with Jude Dobson

This is the remarkable true story of Pippa Latour, one of the last surviving female special operations agents in France during WWII. Born in 1921, Pippa was trained by the British and parachuted into Nazi-occupied Normandy, posing as a teenage soap-seller while covertly gathering intelligence.

Known for her fluency in languages and coding skills, she often sold soap to German soldiers while secretly sending coded messages back to England. Her bravery was unmatched—Pippa hid her codes in a silk thread worn as a hair tie, knowing she could be shot if discovered. Over her time in Normandy, she sent 135 messages with crucial details on German troop movements ahead of D-Day.

After the liberation of Paris in 1944, Pippa completed her mission and went on to live in Kenya, Fiji, and Australia before settling in Auckland. It wasn’t until 2000 that her family learned of her heroic wartime service. Pippa Latour passed away in 2023 at the grand age of 102, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of courage and resilience.
