Kia ora koutou,
It has been fantastic to see so many of you over the last few weeks at the many different events which have been acknowledging student achievement. These have included; - Sports Awards
- Performing Arts Awards
- Gateway
- Technology Showcase and Awards
- Senior Art Exhibition
- Prizegiving (Years 11 and 12)
- Year 13 Graduation
These occasions are vital for staff, students and yourselves to fully appreciate the level and range of success, throughout Orewa College. No student can achieve success without both, yourselves and the college staff supporting and collaborating together. Congratulations to all of those students who have been recipients at any of the above mentioned events.
I wish students in the senior school all the very best in the NCEA examinations which started today. There is information in this newsletter which needs to be read carefully, as unfortunately NZQA has sent out some incorrect details on student ‘Examination Admission Slips’ due to their administrative errors. A reminder that all students in Years 11-13, can see their teachers in their normal timetabled blocks until this Wednesday. I strongly encourage students to make the most of this opportunity.
Plans are fully in place for the Year 8 Outdoor Education camps, which will occur from Sunday 19 November. I know that this will be an enjoyable environment for all concerned.
We look forward to the confirmation of the new government and what effects this will have on the New Zealand educational landscape.
Have a great week.
Ngā mihi
Greg Pierce Principal

Technology Showcase |
Our technology students exhibited some of this year's work at our showcase recently. Their creative and technical skills were on display through the amazing projects they have worked on.
Each subject area was represented - product design, mechatronics, digital, design and visual communication, textiles, future trades, construction, textiles, food technology and hospitality.
The technology department run over 40 courses, over all year levels. This gives students multiple opportunities to develop their innovative ideas, critical thinking, visual and written communication skills and practical abilities.
Courses are designed to support students through academic university pathways as well as apprenticeship and creative fields of work.
The showcase event was a huge success, parents and students were able to give feedback and vote for their favourite designs. Congratulations to the many students who received prizes for their work. |

Bronze Duke of Ed Trip Twenty nine amazing Duke of Ed Bronze students enjoyed an overnight trip to Mangawhai.
The students were awesome and it was impressive to see how they dealt with the challenges they faced along the way. The tramp was tough with lots of mud and sliding around!
Thank you to the teachers who came as well. A great trip for all. |
Year 9 Science Stardome TripLast Tuesday was awesome we went on a trip to the Stardome at One Tree Hill. It was like stepping into a whole new galaxy of fun and learning!
We walked into this magical place, stars were all around us. We got to explore like space explorers. There were huge screens that made us feel like we were floating in space.
We saw the night sky, with stars, planets, and galaxies. Then, the coolest part of all was when we learned about the Big Bang theory! It's the story of how everything in the universe started.

Careers HubThere have been various trips and activities happening through the Careers Hub despite the winding down of the senior school. At various times throughout the year there are opportunities for our Pasifika students to go to PILOT (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) and this term it was the Year 10 students that we took to AUT South Campus.
There, they were involved in various workshops with a variety of schools to discuss and celebrate their Pacific Island roots and encourage and empower them to be who they are. They were also treated to a presentation from Johnnie Timu, the founder of Brown Pride, a very successful Gym and fitness company based in South Auckland.
Locally, we had 4 students involved in an initiative through Bunnings, Trade Skills for Teens programme. The students spent two separate days at Silverdale Bunnings, selecting, then together assembling a barbeque. | | |
The students also selected a not-for-profit group to which they would donate the barbeque. They chose Orewa Baptist Church who gratefully accepted the assembled barbeque.
Next week are the Year 10 Tasters where students spend time out in the community looking at what things they may be interested in doing once they leave school. There are a few spaces still available, students should pop into the Careers Hub as soon as possible if they are interested. |
