Term 1, Week 3, 2024

From the Principal

Tena koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

At Howick College, all students belong to one of six houses, each of which has two Deans and two student House leaders. Houses have their own unique identity and are distinguished by their name, colours and mascot. The name of each House reflects an aspect of our recent local European history:

Bacot (Green) - John Bacot (1821 -1888), was a surgeon who settled with the Fencibles, later becoming the area's representative in the first New Zealand Parliament.
Bell (Blue)
- The historic Bell House was built by an unknown Fencible officer in 1851. It was later owned by the Bell family for over 100 years and is now located in the Howick Historical Village.
Ingham (Orange) -
Howick College founding principal, Mr Don Ingham, served from the time the college opened in 1974 until 1991.
Irvine (Purple/Gold)
- Captain John Irvine, was an early settler who served as the area's last resident magistrate.
MacDonald (Red/White)
- Captain Alexander MacDonald arrived in 1847 as one of the first Fencibles soldiers. He later became the Warden of Howick.
Minerva (Pink)
- Minerva was the name of the sailing ship that brought the first Fencibles and their families from England in 1847 to settle in Howick.

Belonging to a House is a fundamental part of college life, providing students with a sense of being part of something bigger than themselves. As members of a close knit whānau within our broader school community, it fosters pride, unity, and a chance for students to find support, make connections, and celebrate their identity. Our weekly House assemblies are not just about sharing information; they serve as opportunities to recognise student successes and to inspire and learn from one another.

This year we aim to encourage and elevate House spirit through increased competition and cooperation between our Houses. We plan to run more inter-house competitions across a wider range of events, with points and results updated and published on a regular basis. The emphasis of these competitions is on enjoyment and participation. Below are the House placings at the end of week 3 based on the Athletics Day results. Congratulations to our current leaders, Minerva House.

Have a great weekend,

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

Busy Year Ahead for Yr 11 Baseball Player

"Batter up!" - Baseball Silver Medalist, Nikau Waru.

Congratulations to Bacot House student, Nikau Waru, who has some very exciting sporting opportunities coming up this year. Nikau will be playing in the Senior 16U Little League baseball team in the Asia-Pacific Little League World Series Qualifier in Auckland over Easter. His Auckland team won the right to represent New Zealand in the qualifier after defeating Wellington in a regional challenge earlier in February. The qualifier will be played at Lloyd Elsmore Park against teams from South Korea, Guam and Indonesia.

In addition to this, Nikau has been selected to play in the Babe Ruth World Series in Branson, Missouri in August.  He played in the inaugural Midsummer Blast tournament in Levin in January where players from around New Zealand were selected to create the Pac-Men 16U team to travel to the States.  This will be the first time a team from NZ has played at the Babe Ruth tournament. And if that's not enough, he and his club team, the Howick Pakuranga Hawks, also competed in the U16 National Baseball Champs last weekend and came away with the silver medal!

Bronze Medal for Conrad Hynes

Conrad, far left on the podium, proudly wears his Bronze medal.

Congratulations to Conrad Hynes (Y13) on his selection to represent New Zealand at the International Judo Open held ion Canberra last weekend. Conrad competed in the U66kg category in both the Junior Men's (U18) and, for the first time, in the Senior Men's (U20) divisions. Conrad did extremely well, winning the BRONZE medal in the Junior Men's and and achieving an impressive FIFTH place in the Senior Men's category.

Promising Start for 1st XI Boys Cricket

The 1st XI Boys cricket team  began the second half of their summer season with a comfortable 5-wicket away win against Mt Roskill Grammar in their 50-overs match. Notable contributions in a strong all-round team performance included James Dennis claiming his first wickets on debut, with bowling figures of 2-13 from 6 overs, and Sam Reed with 2-17 (6). All the batsmen contributed to chasing down the target, with a solid 26 runs from Prabh Jawanda.

The boys then headed to Westlake Boys for a T20 match and faced, arguably, one of the top boys' school cricket teams in the country. Trent McVeigh led the team's batting effort with 39 runs from 33 balls faced, demonstrating his all-rounder credentials. It was a tough match for the boys against a highly skilled opposition, but they gained valuable experience and learning from the encounter.

The boys' second 50-overs match for this part of the summer was against Lynfield College. Trent McVeigh was the standout bowler with impressive figures of 5-23 off 10 overs, supported by Billy White with 3-28 from 8 overs. Callum Edwards excelled as the batsman, scoring 45 runs off 47 balls, but unfortunately, our boys fell 9 runs short of the target.

In the team's second T20 match, they secured a comprehensive 7-wicket victory against Rosmini College, who have been promoted to the Premier League. The team displayed another impressive all-round bowling and fielding performance, bowling Rosmini out for 59. This was followed by excellent batting from Callum Edwards and Jack Reed, securing the win.

We wish the boys the best of luck for their away game against St Peter's at Orakei Domain this Saturday.
