Term 3 - Week 7

Tēnā koutou,

Last week, we acknowledged the passing of Kīngi Tūheitia - the Māori king.  On Thursday the new Māori Queen was anointed.  Ngā Wai hono i te pō - the youngest child of Kīngi Tūheitia - has been anointed the new leader of the Kīngitanga.  At only 27, she is likely to have a significant influence for the Kīngitanga and across Aotearoa for many years to come.

On Tuesday night we hosted our annual open evening.  The hall was packed with Year 8 students, parents/caregivers and whānau of the prospective new enrolments.  After a short message in the hall we took the attendees on guided tours around our different learning blocks and facilities.  We are immensely proud of what we offer here at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and we know students are enabled to thrive academically, socially, mentally, and physically if they take advantage of all that we offer. A massive thank you to all the staff and students who gave up their time to host our guests on the night.

As part of the event, we launched our new enrollment video for 2025.  You can view the video here - we are very proud of it!

As a reminder, other enrollment information is as follows: We appreciate receiving in-zone enrolments as soon as possible.  It helps to guide our planning for 2025.  A further reminder that our out-of-zone enrolment ballot will take place on Wednesday 18 September.  If you currently live out-of-zone and have a child wanting to attend our school, you will need to submit an enrolment application by 4 p.m. on Tuesday 17 September. Online enrolment forms can be found here. For 2025 we have out-of-zone spaces in the following year levels:

  • Year 9 = 90 spaces
  • Year 10 = 20 spaces
  • Year 11 = 5 spaces
  • Year 12 = 10 spaces
  • Year 13 = 20 spaces

Winter tournament week was also held this week across the motu/land.  Over 100 students were representing our kura all over the north island.

  • Basketball - junior and senior boys premier teams
  • Football - 1st XI girls
  • Hockey - 1st XI boys, 1st XI girls, and 2nd XI girls
  • Netball - premier team
  • Equestrian team

We are proud of all the efforts from our teams this week and we know you all will have represented us with pride.

Next week is the second opportunity for students to sit the online assessments for literacy and numeracy.  Kia kaha and all the best to all the students involved.

Have a great weekend.

Ngā mihi

Ben Claxton

Any business wanting to host a student for work experience?
Every year we are funded to put out 70 of our senior students on voluntary work experiences. From these work experiences come some amazing things….... confidence, a sense of belonging, the knowledge that they can add some value, learning about industries that they know very little about and sometimes the opportunity of potential employment. Everything that is learned on a work experience contributes to a future decision and learning work ready skills are vital for life beyond school. Do you know a business that would like to host a Taupo-nui-a-Tia College student for a 10-day work experience? If this is something that you would like to know more about, please contact Nicola Thomsen, Gateway Coordinator, e-mail: [email protected]
